Lex Initiative for Rights Advocacy and Development - LIRAD Empowering marginalised women facing discrimination/violence through legal change, advocacy & litigation

08/03/2026

This International Women's Day 2026, under the theme "Give to Gain," we are reminded that investing in women and girls is not charity. It is justice.
When marginalised women gain access to rights, opportunities, and legal protection, entire communities grow stronger.

LIRAD joined the official launch of the Digital Rights Toolkit by DigiCivic Initiative in Abuja, an important step toward strengthening public education on digital rights and responsible digital citizenship.

Digital rights are real. They show up in privacy, consent, expression, online safety, and how we’re treated online. This toolkit helps make those rights clearer and more practical for everyday users and institutions.

We’re proud to support collective efforts that keep digital spaces safe, accessible, and rights-affirming for all.

LIRAD hosted a two-day onboarding under our self-funded FeminaJustice Project, welcoming a new cohort of young female lawyers.

The sessions grounded volunteers in feminist lawyering, legal empowerment, and the structural barriers shaping women’s access to justice, while reaffirming our shared values of solidarity, accountability, and ethical advocacy.

We also centred wellness, because care sustains feminist and human rights work. From mental health to physical wellbeing, the conversations reminded us that wellbeing is part of how we show up for others, and for ourselves.

Through FeminaJustice, we are expanding access to justice and building lawyers equipped to practise feminist lawyering, lead with compassion, and grounded in dignity and inclusion.

We are pleased to share that Lex Initiative for Rights, Advocacy and Development has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

This partnership strengthens coordination on rights protection, case referrals, and community-facing rights education, with a focus on improving access to justice for people most likely to be left out.

Thank you to the NHRC team. We look forward to the work ahead.

A Deaf woman has full autonomy over her body.

Her image deserves protection online, and she deserves a safe digital space like everyone else, disability or not.

N.B: The video includes sign language so Deaf women can connect directly with the message. An interpreter voices the affirmation for wider access.

No one should suffer in silence.

In this 16 Days of Activism, save these numbers and reach out if you or someone you know is experiencing gender-based violence.
Help is available.

LIRAD, in collaboration with Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, recently visited the Mpappe community to break down the VAPP Act in a simplified form, and to also sensitize the community on reporting channels for survivors and victims of gender based violence.

We focused on what the law says, the offences and consequences, the protections it offers, and how survivors of gender-based violence can access support and justice. Knowledge is a first step toward safety, and legal advocacy is how we at LIRAD, ensure no one faces violence alone.

Human rights shape how we live and whether we can speak with freedom. On Human Rights Day and every day, we defend these essentials. If human rights are our everyday essentials, our collective responsibility is to protect it and ensure it’s a safe and equitable world for all. Watch. Share. Act.
