Honored to celebrate Sweden’s National Day and 65 Years of Sweden–Nigeria Relations. 🇸🇪🇳🇬

The Executive Director of Girl Child Freedom at the Grassroot, Nwaiwu Chinonso, was honored to attend the reception hosted by the Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria to commemorate Sweden’s National Day and celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Nigeria.

We extend our appreciation to the Embassy of Sweden and Her Excellency, Ambassador Anna Westerholm, for bringing together partners and stakeholders to mark this important milestone.

As an organization committed to advancing the rights and opportunities of girls and young women, we commend Sweden’s longstanding support for gender equality and initiatives that empower women and girls across Nigeria. The kidnapping of students is a threat to education, security, and the future of our nation. Girl Child Freedom at the Grassroot (GCFG) Nigeria. Ambassador has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of child abduction in Nigeria, citing the recent kidnapping of teachers and pupils in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The GCFG Ambassador called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the victims and ensure their safe and immediate return.

She noted that the growing insecurity across communities has made many girls at the grassroots increasingly vulnerable and unsafe. According to her, the situation has contributed to higher rates of school dropout among children, particularly girls, while also increasing the prevalence of early and forced child marriage in some communities.

The Ambassador further emphasized that protecting children is a collective responsibility and urged government agencies, community leaders, civil society organizations, parents, and other stakeholders to strengthen efforts and support initiatives aimed at safeguarding the rights, safety, education, and overall well-being of children across the country.
