The 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” exposes a new face of modern slavery. Behind every fake job offer, romance DM, or crypto “investment” message may be a person forced to send it. Today, traffickers are not only exploiting victims — they are forcing victims to exploit others.

Victims are lured with fake job advertisements promising good pay abroad. Hoping for a better life, they travel only to be locked in heavily guarded “scam compounds.” There, their passports are seized. Under threats, debt bo***ge, and violence, they are forced to work 12–16 hours daily running romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud, and other online schemes. The profits fund money laundering, drugs, and more trafficking.

The impact is double. Victims suffer trauma, abuse, and stigma. When rescued, many are wrongly treated as criminals instead of victims. For society, trust erodes. Citizens lose money, businesses lose credibility, and governments lose revenue needed for schools, hospitals, and roads. In Nigeria and other countries with high youth unemployment, “remote jobs abroad” are especially dangerous bait.

Ending this requires action. We must:

PREVENT: through public awareness and by taking down fake job ads.

PROTECT: protect survivors with support, empowerment not prosecution and stigmatization

PROSECUTE: prosecute traffickers through stronger cross-border cooperation and by freezing criminal assets. Tech companies, banks, and governments must work together.

Trapped Behind the Scam reminds us that slavery has gone digital, but the cruelty is the same. National growth is impossible when people are treated as tools for crime. This year, let us see the human behind the scam, report suspicious offers, and demand justice. No one should be bought, sold, or forced to commit crimes to survive.
