Our Lagos convening was more than just a convening. It was a space for learning, reflection, strategy, and solidarity.

‎Through the Bridge to Justice Initiative, we gathered in Lagos to strengthen movement lawyering, deepen collaboration, and reimagine what accessible justice can look like for vulnerable communities across West and Central Africa.

‎Here’s a glimpse into the conversations, connections, and collective commitment that shaped the convening.

‎Join our community online to keep up with our work across the region.

What does access to justice really look like across different countries?

‎During our Lagos convening, country panels from Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and Sierra Leone shared honest insights on the realities of justice systems in their contexts.

‎Our community jointly agreed that access to justice is not only about laws on paper. It is about whether people can safely seek help when their rights are violated.

‎Before legal representation even becomes possible, the first need for many people from key populations and marginalised communities, is often safety, dignity, and protection from harm.

‎These reflections from our Lagos convening highlight an important reality. When communities are excluded from justice systems, silence and fear are reinforced.

‎At Justice Bridge Foundation, we believe access to justice must be community-centered, responsive, and rooted in lived realities. This is how we begin to build sustainable justice systems that work for all.

There is a gap between the existence of rights and the ability to claim them.

‎In many parts of West and Central Africa, key populations and vulnerable groups continue to face criminalisation, violence, and exclusion. Oftentimes when violations occur, there are not enough lawyers who are willing or equipped to respond.

‎In this video, our Executive Director, Dr. Seun Bakare speaks about The Bridge to Justice Initiative. This initiative aims to build a network of movement lawyers to expand access to justice for key populations and vulnerable groups.

Justice Bridge Foundation will be present at the 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, The Gambia.

We will take part in the NGO Forum, the public sessions and also engage in a number of meetings on the sidelines, alongside partners and movement actors from across the continent. This comes at a moment when advancing access to justice for key populations and other vulnerable groups requires steady, deliberate action.

Our engagement will focus on the role of strategic litigation in addressing systemic barriers, drawing from our work across West and Central Africa, and building practical collaboration across law, public health, and human rights.

If you will be in Banjul, we would be glad to connect.

Not everything we believe about access to justice holds true. From assumptions about lawyers understanding communities, to the idea that cost is the only barrier, these myths overlook the real challenges marginalized communities face every day.

The truth?

Access to justice is shaped by more than resources. Stigma, distrust, and systemic gaps continue to limit who can seek protection and be heard. Bridging these gaps starts with listening, understanding lived realities, and building systems that truly work for people. This is one of the core goals of the Bridge to Justice Project.

As part of the Lagos convening, participants visited the offices of TIERS for a partner engagement session grounded in reflection and learning.

The visit offered a valuable opportunity to engage on the resilience of our movement, particularly in navigating sustained legal and social pressures. We also discussed TIERS’ recent success in a landmark HIV discrimination case, which stands as a strong example of what strategic, community-rooted litigation can achieve.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Executive Director of TIERS for the warm reception and for hosting us so generously.

Moments like this remind us that beyond training and convenings, movement building is sustained through shared experience, practical learning, and solidarity across organisations.

The Bridge to Justice initiative is a regional effort by Justice Bridge Foundation to strengthen access to justice for key populations and other marginalized groups across West and Central Africa. It focuses on training and supporting a new cadre of movement lawyers, building strong partnerships with communities, and advancing strategic litigation that can challenge harmful laws and practices over time.

This week in Lagos, we reached an important milestone in that journey. Over two days, lawyers and community leaders from four countries came together to move this work forward.

Day one focused on country-specific landscape mapping across Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon. Together, participants examined the legal realities shaping access to justice in each context, identified key risks, and highlighted concrete opportunities for strategic litigation and community-based legal defence.

Day two turned to the future. We worked collectively to review and validate the Bridge to Justice movement lawyering curriculum. This was a rigorous and grounded process, designed to ensure that the curriculum reflects lived realities and equips lawyers and communities to respond effectively.

What stood out most was the depth of engagement and the shared clarity in the room. Across different contexts, there was a clear recognition that isolated efforts are no longer enough. What is needed is a coordinated and sustained approach.

This convening marks the beginning of that shift.

We are grateful to our partners, participants, and especially to our funders for making this possible. Your support is helping to build a new generation of movement lawyers, rooted in community and committed to advancing justice in challenging environments.

The work continues.

Yesterday, Justice Bridge Foundation’s Executive Director, Dr Seun Bakare, spoke on Unilateralism, Multilateralism and the New World Order at the 9th International Law Association – Nigerian Branch Conference in Abuja.

The discussion engaged directly with the current strain on the international system, drawing on unfolding geopolitical realities, from the Ukraine war and shifting Western alliances to tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, as well as recent developments in Venezuela. These contexts reflect a wider pattern in which powerful states increasingly act outside multilateral frameworks, placing pressure on the rules-based order and the institutions designed to uphold it.

Dr Bakare’s contribution examined what these developments reveal about the future of multilateralism, particularly in a period marked by fragmentation, competing power centres, and growing reliance on unilateral action.

We thank the organisers for the platform and all participants for a rigorous and timely exchange.

Science has made incredible progress in HIV prevention and treatment. This World Health Day, we’re reminded that science saves lives, but this can only be achieved when health services are easily accessible.

Across West and Central Africa, key populations and other marginalized groups face legal and social barriers that prevent them from accessing care.

At Justice Bridge Foundation, we work to remove legal and systemic barriers that prevent people from accessing healthcare safely. Learn more about our work via the link below.
