Hope sometimes comes when you least expect it.”

One of the biggest challenges we faced during Mitcheal’s 14-year journey with cerebral palsy was mobility.

By the time he was 14, Mitcheal weighed about 35 kilograms. As he grew bigger and stronger, lifting him into the car, carrying him up staircases, moving him between home, school, hospital appointments, and therapy sessions became increasingly difficult. Beyond the physical demands on us as caregivers, there was also the constant struggle of finding a fit-for-purpose wheelchair that truly met his needs. Accessibility in many public places only made the journey more frustrating.

A few days ago, while attending the Nile University Student Innovation Exhibition on official duty, I came across a project that stopped me in my tracks.

The title read:

“Design and Implementation of an Eye-Tracking Controlled Smart Wheelchair for Hands-Free Navigation.”

As I listened to the students explain their prototype, my heart was full. Their solution is designed for people living with severe motor impairments, including children and adults with cerebral palsy, ALS, and high-level spinal cord injuries.

The idea is simple yet transformative: using eye-tracking technology, the wheelchair allows users to move forward, turn left or right, and stop—simply by moving their eyes. More importantly, the students are working towards making the technology affordable and accessible, reducing dependence on caregivers while giving users greater independence and dignity.

Mitcheal may no longer be here to benefit from innovations like this, but knowing that young Nigerians are dedicating their knowledge and creativity to solving real-life challenges gives me immense hope.
