ICYMI: In recent weeks, RuralPro, in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Nigeria and the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), successfully organized a training program for local council members in Abuja.

The workshop's main goal was to equip Gwagwalada Area Council legislators with the knowledge and abilities necessary to advance legislative processes that genuinely benefit the constituents they represent.

As part of our Citizens at the Centre project, we aim to foster democratic practices that reflect citizens' shared priorities.

Our collaboration with FES Nigeria and NILDS underscores the significance of partnerships in driving positive change and safeguarding civic spaces.

We are thrilled to announce that Hon. Nuhu Usman Councilor, Staff Quarters Ward, Gwagwalada Area Council in Abuja has been awarded the Legislative Legacy Award by the Foundation for Rural Proletariat and Community Advancement (RuralPro).

This award is presented in recognition of Councilor Usman's unwavering support for our Citizens at the Centre project, and for his tireless efforts in ensuring effective representation and youth mainstreaming in his constituency in the year 2022.

Through the Citizens at the Centre project, we aimed to promote civic engagement among community members and increase their participation in decision-making processes that affect their daily lives. We firmly believe that an engaged community is a strong community, and Councilor Usman has helped us to reinforce that belief.

Councilor Usman's commitment to his constituents is an inspiration to us all, and we are proud to honor him with this well-deserved award. We thank him for his hard work, dedication, and impeccable performance as a local legislator and for his service to the people of Gwagwalada Area Council.

The best way to understand how citizens view their community — and what they want for the future — is to ask them. This is the power of the Citizens at the Centre project.

Through our community engagements, we have guided Gwagwalada people in Abuja to identify 9 Shared Public Priorities and where action is needed.

As we continue our work to elevate local concerns and build a culture of participatory governance, today, we are making the official presentation of the 2022 Survey Report of the Gwagwalada We Want, to the elected officials of the Area Council.

Strengthening local democracy is our top interest. After guiding the population in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, to identify their shared priorities, RuralPro is supporting the newly inducted Councillors in Gwagwalada, to transform local priorities into action.
