Understanding Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV)
OGBV is a growing global crisis affecting millions—especially women and marginalized genders. It includes harassment, cyberstalking, doxxing, hate speech, deepfakes, and other forms of tech-enabled abuse.
Key Facts
73% of women globally have faced some form of online violence (UN).
In Nigeria, 76% of women surveyed have experienced harassment such as cyberstalking, non-consensual image sharing, and online threats.
Platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram are major hotspots, often worsened by cultural stigma and victim-blaming.
Why It Happens
Weak law enforcement, poor reporting systems, and cultural norms that normalize abuse leave many survivors unsupported and silenced.
Forms of OGBV
Cyberbullying, hate speech, harassment, unsolicited explicit content, impersonation, and misinformation—each capable of causing serious, lasting harm.
Impact on Survivors
OGBV affects mental health, safety, dignity, and freedom of expression. Many live in fear, trauma, and isolation.
Digital Divide
Limited digital literacy puts many women at greater risk and reduces access to help. Bridging this gap is essential for true online equality.
What Needs to Change
Stronger enforcement of laws like the Cybercrimes Act (2015).
Better response from social media platforms.
Community support and consistent accountability.
Allyship & Community Action
Men, boys, and all community members must speak out, support survivors, and help create safer digital spaces.
