Simple but important action!

There's a Yoruba adage that says, "Tí a bá ta òkò s'ọ́jà, ará ilé eni ní n bá", literally translated, "if you throw a stone into the marketplace, it could hit your relative", meaning you might think you've gotten away with an action, not knowing the consequence could be closer to home than you think.

Yesterday, we made a post about the NIHSA flooding alerts and how climate change will make flood events more severe in Nigeria this year. The take-home was: take care of your environment.

Then someone asked me: "We take care of our environment, clear the drainage, and dispose of trash properly, but we still experienced a flood. Am I not doing my part?"

My questioner is doing everything right. However, the reality of climate change is that it operates at a planetary scale. This means that even if you are taking action while your neighbour is not, the consequences can still rain down on both of you-- although your actions reduce the intensity.

Climate change at the planetary level also means that if countries like the US allow their companies to operate unsustainably, driving up global emissions, the resulting hazards can be felt thousands of miles away, including right here in Sub-Saharan Africa.

So while the area you live in may not be particularly flood-prone, you might have a relative in Lagos or another vulnerable community, and your negligence or someone else's could cost them dearly.

So…? Take action today. Be climate conscious.

A flood is coming and climate change is going to make it worse.

Listen: the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has warned that over 14,000 communities across 33 states and the FCT are at high risk of severe flooding between July and September 2026.

So like I said in the beginning, a flood is really coming and climate change is going to make it more severe. How and why?

Let’s start with the science first: a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture. So for every 1°C increase in global temperature, the atmosphere can hold about 7% more water vapour. That means when rain falls, it can fall much harder. Climate change is not just raising temperatures; it is intensifying rainfall and increasing the likelihood of devastating floods. Hence the NIHSA report.

“What can I do about it?”

I’m glad you asked. Start simple: keep your environment clean.

Don't judge me, but I have been unable to abstain from soda, like completely.

To recycle the plastic bottles, it is important to separate the covers from the bottles because every step in the recycling process adds up.

But here is the thing: the seller I regularly buy soda from, right in front of my house, she insists she doesn't have coke in glass bottles. She always wants me to buy the ones in plastics. (Maybe that's more profitable for her, I don't know.)

However for me, it's beyond profit. It's about not normalizing single-use plastics when there are alternatives.

The world doesn't have inexhaustible resources, and we can't keep hurting our environment, and expect it to remain the same.

So am I a bad person for refusing to patronize her and instead patronize someone farther away, who sells what I want?

Happy Global Recycling Day!
