Kuta has been creating opportunities through art, fostering a platform for emerging artists to learn, create, collaborate, and thrive through education, residencies, exhibitions, and community engagement.

On Saturday, 25th July 2026, we opened our doors for Open Studio as guests spent time with the works of our Artists-in-Residence, Korede Aremo , Ayomide Ogechi & Godwin Rotimi as they shared their new artistic approach to materials and history.

The event began with the audience moving around and engaging with their works on the popular and first news paper in Abeokuta, representation, memory, history, spirituality culture and more. They also shared their process, inspiration, and how the use of indigenous elements in connection with their works.

While audiences engage with the works, a sound performance by Damilare Adeyemi got everyone elated with energetic experimental sounds.

Join us at the Department of Art and Industrial Design at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic for an open dialogue and research presentation by Yi Shi .shi.11 , one of our current artists-in-residence.

Yi, who is both an artist and architect as well as a scholar, will present her research on “Building Systems & Adaptive Comfort”. This research reflects her significant interest in rethinking how architecture and design can be functional in various ways while also embodying cultural identity.

Yi: My presentation is about

“A reflection on my daily frictions with air, water and electricity here during my stay, and architectural notions I unlearnt from those experiences.”

Yi Shi is an M.Arch I (27’) candidate at Yale School of Architecture. She graduated with a BEng in urban planning from Tongji University (Shanghai, China) and an MArch from Cranbrook Academy of Art (MI, USA). She sees space as an aggregation of inter-scalar mediation—text, image, eyes, body, breath, and beyond— which are shaped by space, and in turn shape it. She witnesses, collects, documents, and reveals to initiate, then traces spatial interventions by mark-making, storytelling, and site-revisiting. She hopes to convey messages on shared foundations between disparate beings, activating experiences that associate the past and present, the others and the self, or events.

This June at Canvas Club, our theme of focus is Indigenous Designs & Architecture with a presentation by Rufus Nwoko as we explore environmentally conscious architecture through the visionary works of Papa Demas Nwoko. This conversation will highlight his authorship, design philosophy, and contributions to architecture and design literature, offering new perspectives on sustainability, culture, and the built environment.

Our guest facilitator Rufus Ofunochukwu Nwoko .u.n15 is an artist working across theatre, photography, and film, committed to shaping a forward-looking narrative for Nigerian art. Raised between Benin City and Ibadan, his creative voice is rooted in movement between cities, generations, and evolving artistic forms.

As the creative director and curator of New Culture Studios in Ibadan, founded by his grandfather, Demas Nwoko Rufus, he approaches the space as a living institution. He also engages with the legacies of Nigerian modernism, actively archiving and reinterpreting the works of his grandfather and the broader history of the Mbari Club and the School of Drama. The archive, to him, is not a museum; it's material for invention, a framework to build from.

Idjenughwa Ruona is a curator, cultural producer, and poet based in Benin City, Nigeria. She is co-founder of the Rongo Art Foundation and creative director of the Benin Arts and Books Festival (BABFEST), an annual multidisciplinary platform that brings together artists, writers, and cultural practitioners from Edo State and the wider African diaspora.

Her curatorial work engages deeply with heritage, community, and the politics of time and cultural visibility. In 2024, she co-curated Signposts of Time, a group exhibition with 30 artists produced in collaboration with MOWAA, which interrogated cultural memory and the Benin Bronze legacy.

“My intention for this residency is one of deliberate and expansive study of books, of streets, markets, cultural and historical centers, and of the living texture of a city in motion. I hope to arrive not with a fixed project but with a disciplined openness, a willingness to be changed by encounter, and a rigorous enough practice to shape that change into form. Concretely, I plan to immerse myself in the city’s cultural and intellectual landscape from the first week.

This means long hours in libraries and archives, reading across disciplines like urban theory, poetry, and philosophy of time, alongside sustained walks and observations in the city itself. I am interested in what the city knows about itself and what it has forgotten.
