On the 27th November 2025, the Ebonyi state gender based violence taskforce had the privilege of attending a Consultative Forum on Eliminating Harmful traditional and Religious Practices Impacting on the Rights of women and Gender Equality in Ebonyi state, marking the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, hosted by the National Human Rights Commission at the Ebosaca Conference Hall, Ebonyi State Ministry of Health, Centenary City, Abakaliki.

The discussion focused on eliminating harmful traditional and religious practices that negatively impact the rights of women and hinder gender equality in Ebonyi State.
We explored various deeply rooted practices, their social drivers, and most importantly, how we can collectively and collaboratively work to end them.

Key concerns were also raised regarding:
🔹 The implementation level of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law by the Ebonyi State GBV Taskforce
🔹 The functionality of the Safe Space—a mandate of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development
🔹 Availability of toll-free numbers for reporting GBV cases anonymously

I am glad that these questions received clear and constructive responses, strengthening our shared commitment to justice, safety, and dignity for all.

The meeting ended with refreshments and closing remarks, reinforcing the need for continued partnership and advocacy.

Together, we can build an Ebonyi State and a Nigeria free from gender-based violence.

Gender-based violence is punishable by Law and is not acceptable in my Ebonyi. Let’s continue to spread the word so that people will refrain from perpetrating such acts.

Together, we can put a halt to all forms of Gender Based Violence in my Ebonyi state, Nigeria, and the world at large.

On Wednesday, 11th of October 2023, the International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated.

The theme of this year's celebration is 'Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being" and the Ebonyi State GBV Taskforce in collaboration with Ebonyi State Ministry Of Education went on an outreach to:-
Azuiyiokwu Primary and Girls High School, Abakaliki.

The theme is trying to remind us that notwithstanding gender, the girl child is important in society and deserves equal rights as the male counterpart.
Her rights matter, and she has to be given the opportunity to effectively take up any mantle of responsibility she so pleases.

Also, every girl deserves to acquire education to any level. Investing in the girl child simply means equipping her for life/societal challenges yet to come. She can be equipped with knowledge, skills, etc.

The girl child deserves to be looked out for. If not taken care of, they could be victims of societal vices, and they may not be able to speak up. Girls need empowerment, sensitization, and orientation of all that is happening around them E.g Healthcare, Gender Based Violence related issues, etc. So they can grow into formidable individuals of society.

On Tuesday, 10th of October 2023, the World Mental Health Day was celebrated.

The theme for this year's Mental Health Day is 'Mental Health is a Universal Human Right.'
We join the rest of the world in commemorating this special day because there is a need for more awareness and orientation for people to take better care of themselves and to foster healthy living.

The Ebonyi State Gender-Based Violence Task Force is keen on supporting mental health issues because it helps to curtail certain vices that might lead to unfortunate occurrences in the state. We will continue to lend our voice to promote Mental Health in our society.
