Standing tall against the odds!

The quiver trees (𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘶𝘮) are a true symbol of resilience in the Namib Desert. Adapted to survive harsh conditions, scorching temperatures and very little rainfall, these remarkable trees continue to thrive in one of the world’s most unforgiving environments.
Here at the NamibRand Nature Reserve, their strength is especially striking on the Losberg Mountain, where they stand tall against the rugged landscape, reminding us of nature’s incredible ability to endure and adapt.
In a land of extremes, the quiver tree stands as a powerful reminder that resilience is not just about surviving, but about standing tall despite the challenges. 💛

Today our team had the opportunity to fly to the top of the Losberg — the highest mountain on the Reserve. ⛰️

Our radio repeater is located on the Losberg and has been not functioning for the past several days. We took a helicopter ride to investigate. Unfortunately it requires additional repairs so the team will hike up to repeater to reinstall fixed parts once we get them back from the experts.

Although we couldn’t fix it on the spot, we were struck by the stunning views and all the unique plants that only occur up there.

Rainy weather, lightning and thunder woke us at 2am this morning. It sounded big and intense, but so far we’ve only received 1mm.
It’s cloudy though, and hopefully we’ll get some more during the day! 🤞🌧️

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🌍

Today we shine a spotlight on one of the most important, yet most misunderstood birds — the vulture.

Often misrepresented, vultures are the silent sentinels of our natural world. Nature’s clean-up crew, ecosystem guardians, flying giants, and devoted parents.

Far from the unfair caricatures in media, vultures play a vital role in healthy ecosystems. By efficiently consuming carcasses and organic waste, they help prevent the spread of deadly diseases that could impact wildlife, livestock, and people. They also provide economic benefits and may even help reduce carbon emissions.

But vultures are in crisis. Populations worldwide are declining catastrophically due to poisoning, illegal killing, and collisions or electrocutions on power lines. Without these sentinels of the sky, the consequences for our environment would be severe.

That’s why International Vulture Awareness Day matters. It’s a chance to shatter the myths, celebrate these remarkable birds, and take action to protect them before it’s too late.

Here on the Reserve, we’re lucky to see them often.

Once a year during breeding season, we fly over the Reserve to locate nesting sites. We then return to tag the chicks — with wing tags, leg rings, and sometimes satellite trackers. This lets us follow their journeys long after they leave the nest.

Let’s give vultures the chance to recover and continue the vital work they do.

🌸 𝗛𝗮𝗽p𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆! 🌸

The spring equinox may be later this month, but 1 September is Spring Day in Southern Africa — a celebration of warmer days, new growth, and the season ahead.

Here in the desert, spring makes itself known in small, beautiful ways. In a place known for being dry and rugged, a splash of colour goes a long way.

Thanks to the June rains, flowers are popping up across the Reserve. It’s a reminder of how much life is quietly thriving in the Namibian desert.

From tiny blooms between the stones to bright patches against the earth, every flower is proof of nature’s resilience. 🌼
