A Tribute to a Fallen Champion: Mr. Mendu Katupose.

"A voice for the silent, a strength for the forgotten." It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that the Namibian Organization of Youth with Disabilities (NOYD) bids farewell to our late Treasurer and brother, Mr. Mendu Katupose.

Mr. Katupose was more than just an executive member of our board; he was the heartbeat of our advocacy. Hailing from the Otjozondjupa Region, he brought with him a grassroots understanding of the challenges faced by youth with disabilities in Namibia. His journey was one of resilience, proving that physical barriers are no match for a determined spirit.

A Legacy of Advocacy

Long before his election to the NOYD Board in December 2024, Mendu was already a household name in activism. He did not wait for a title to serve; he served because he believed in a Namibia where disability is not a limitation to opportunity.

As our Treasurer, he upheld his duties resources with the same integrity and dedication he applied to his activism. He was a steward of our vision, ensuring that every effort made by NOYD reached those who needed it most.

A Void That Cannot Be Filled

To the youth of Namibia, we have lost a mentor. To the disability community, we have lost a fierce protector. To those of us at NOYD, we have lost a friend whose laughter and wisdom guided us through challenging moments.

As we mourn his untimely passing on 26 January 2026, we do not just weep for the leader we lost; we celebrate the path he cleared for others to follow. We commit ourselves to carrying forward the torch of inclusivity and empowerment that he held so high.

Rest in Power, Comrade Mendu. Your struggle continues through us.

~ Statement by the NOYD Chairperson.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities reminds us that inclusion is not seasonal... it’s daily work. It’s in our policies, our attitudes, our buildings, our languages, and our choices. Today we celebrate, but tomorrow we keep pushing forward. 🌍✨

Assistive technology (AT) helps persons with disabilities thrive in the workplace by removing barriers and creating equal opportunities. Tools like screen readers for the visually impaired, speech-to-text software for those with mobility challenges, and ergonomic keyboards for people with physical disabilities enable smoother and more efficient work. AT also includes hearing aids, communication devices, and adaptive apps that support different needs. By integrating these technologies, employers foster inclusivity, boost productivity, and empower employees with disabilities to contribute their full potential. On World AT Day, 4th June 2025, let’s celebrate and advocate for more accessible workplaces where everyone can succeed! ♿💡

The Secretary General of the National Federation of People with Disabilities in Namibia (NFPDN), Orben Muluti, indicated that press freedom is a key contributor to national development as it contributes to the transparent and effective utilisation of state resources.

He further stated that when it comes to reporting on persons with disabilities, it is crucial for the media to use terms that are in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Muluti also underscored the importance of incorporating persons with disabilities in news rooms.
