Magdalena Amunyela, Project Assistant Intern and Nicolene Goses, the Civic Engagement Officer of Okombahe Rural YouthNetwork, participated in a four-day Advocacy Training for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) hosted by which concluded on Friday, 12 September 2025.

The participants noted the training to be an eye-opening and empowering experience. It deepened their understanding of advocacy as a powerful tool that enables citizens, particularly young people, to influence decision-making and bring about positive change.

Amunyela said, “growing up in a rural community I recognized that many rural areas face persistent challenges and often lack the support to turn plans into action. The training reinforced that citizens have rights and by exercising them responsibly, they can engage decision-makers and create sustainable solutions.”

The participants learned that advocacy is a democratic right rooted in freedom of expression, provided it benefits the community. They noted the importance of understanding Namibia’s four sources of law and that ordinary citizens can propose ideas for Parliament.
The training introduced practical tools such as petitions, media engagement, social media, public hearings and peaceful marches, as well as the SMART framework for effective campaign planning. Above all, participants realized advocacy must be authentic and community-driven. A key lesson was the value of volunteerism, with true impact coming from sincere contribution. By working with organizations like RuralRise, young people can uplift communities and help build a more inclusive Namibia.
