Supporting the Future Farmers of Namibia 🌱

We thoroughly enjoyed hosting the TVET (Vocational Training) students from Open Doors Education Centre (ODEC), together with Tangeni Shilongo Namibia, at Farm Ubuntu this week.

Their learning journey began with a workshop at ODEC, where students designed their own home vegetable gardens. The challenge was to work with the resources they already have available and develop practical solutions for producing food for themselves, their families, and their communities.

This activity helped learners apply their knowledge of soil health, composting, water management, seed selection, and low-cost gardening techniques to the realities of growing food in an urban desert environment.

The following day, we welcomed the students to Farm Ubuntu, where they were able to see these concepts being applied on a larger scale and learn more about both the challenges and rewards of agriculture. It was wonderful to see the learners actively engaged, asking questions, and getting involved. For some, it was their first experience seeing large shade houses and drip irrigation systems in operation.

The compost turning activity was a real favourite, while our worm farms received reactions ranging from “Yuck!” to “WOW!” 😂

Investing in practical agricultural education helps equip young people with valuable skills, strengthens food security, and inspires the next generation of growers and entrepreneurs. We look forward to seeing where their agricultural journeys take them.

All hands on deck to get a big compost order ready for delivery. The funds we raise from compost sales pays the teams wages, keeps the farm running and contributes to community projects in Swakopmund

Today we started the process of extracting worms from the finished worm castings (vermicompost) and re-homing them to a new tub.
