Years ago, we outed this guy for stolen valor. As Facebook and social media has evolved there are more and more stolen valor cases than ever. One of the reason for this is that the rise of benefits for veterans has risen and expanded across the US.
Some states have expanded veteran benefits at a level that makes the risk outweigh the crime. For example, some states have taken property taxes off the table for veterans and that is a savings that is really worthwhile.
Other states have free tuition for veterans, and their kids as well as health care benefits. In the state of California, Medi-Cal offers free health care for low income veterans including their families. This is an incentive that drives fraud at times. Also, some states like Ohio had grant in aid programs that paid for closing costs for veterans to buy homes.
Some states offer low interest loans for SDVOB companies, and that is also enticing. For example, Amazon will list your company in the buy box as veteran owned and in their business profile. That has certain companies trying to get that certification, as a lot of people are willing to buy from a vet owned company.
We could go on about veteran benefits, the point is that there are people willing to take advantage of organizations and agencies that help out veterans. As a result, they are willing to lie about their service and commit stolen valor. In our experience, there is very little prosecution in stolen valor cases. So people will go on portraying themselves as vets to steal benefits, which hurts other vets. Also, no one is a recon sniper, and there were 300 Navy SEALs in Vietnam and we have met 3487 of them. hooah.
