北极四圣又称四圣真君，即指天蓬、天猷、翊圣（黑煞）、佑圣（真武）四位神将，是北帝的部下，又称北极四圣真君。北帝可以指北极紫微大帝，也可说是北阴酆都大帝。此二尊北阴酆都大帝为北极紫微大帝与幽冥的化身，为幽冥酆都界中最高总领。北帝领北极四圣众部将帅及众多阴兵安镇酆都罗山（此即是人曰酆都。处极北而广大茫茫又称北罗酆）镇守，制约幽冥。道教说因众生造作恶业，不修道德，至感妖魔邪鬼，枉害生人。元始天尊哀悯众生，故大兴慈悲，特遣九天延祥涤厄四圣真君，下降世间，扫除邪鬼，救护群生，彰显大道。四圣真君永镇玉皇大帝殿前。
