SEILS #11 | Conversation with Professor Fernando Reimers from Harvard University

We were honoured to co-host Professor Fernando Reimers, Ford Foundation Professor of Practice in International Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Director of the Global Education Innovation Initiative at Harvard University, for the eleventh edition of the Sunway Education Inclusive Leadership Series (SEILS).

Moderated by Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee, Group CEO of Sunway Education and Director, ASLI Board of Directors, the conversation explored the timely and thought-provoking theme “How to Make Universities More Relevant: The Climate Change–AI Nexus.”

Professor Reimers examined how universities must evolve in response to two defining forces of our time: artificial intelligence and climate change distinguishing between innovation and transformation.

Reflecting on the growing role of AI in learning environments, he cautioned that unequal access to technology risks widening existing educational disparities, highlighting the immense potential of AI to strengthen governance systems.

On climate education, Professor Reimers stressed that universities must move beyond simply teaching scientific facts. He argued that education systems often leave students overwhelmed rather than empowered, and that project-based learning is essential in cultivating a sense of efficacy and responsibility in addressing climate challenges.

Professor Reimers concluded with a powerful reminder that universities must not only prepare students for the future of work, but also equip them to contribute meaningfully to society and to the shared global challenges facing humanity.

Maklumat palsu. Krisis global. Dunia tanpa sempadan. Bersediakah belia kita?

CEO ASLI telah memenuhi jemputan Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) dan Majlis Belia Malaysia (MBM) untuk berkongsi mengenai “A Borderless World, A Vulnerable Generation: Rethinking Youth Security” di Konvensyen Belia Kebangsaan 2026.

Konvensyen yang diadakan bersempena dengan Sambutan Hari Belia Negara 2026 ini telah menghimpunkan belia dari seluruh negara untuk berbincang mengenai hala tuju masa depan, cabaran semasa, dan inisiatif pemerkasaan generasi muda.

Dalam sesi tersebut, CEO ASLI telah mengingatkan kepentingan peranan belia dalam menangani krisis maklumat palsu dan salah. Beliau menegaskan agar generasi muda sentiasa berwaspada dan kritis dalam menilai informasi yang diterima, di samping mempersiapkan diri dengan ilmu dan kemahiran untuk mendepani pelbagai isu global yang semakin kompleks.

🌍💸 How Should the Global South Respond to Global Economic Shocks?

ASLI, Sunway University, and Citizens International hosted a public forum themed Confronting Global Economic Shocks: Lessons & Challenges for the Global South.

We were honoured to host YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Finance, alongside Shakira Teh, Senior Economist at the World Bank, and Shahril Hamdan, host of Malaysia’s No. 1 podcast Keluar Sekejap — moderated by Dr Shahridan Faiez, Chairman of Citizens International.

Against the backdrop of growing global uncertainty, the forum unpacked the structural vulnerabilities facing developing economies, the cascading effects of trade disruption and energy volatility, and what meaningful policy responses could look like for nations with less margin for error.

The session also explored how the Global South can move from being a passive absorber of external shocks to a more coordinated, resilient force in shaping its own economic future.
