Holding On, Letting Grow & Carrying Love Forward

Some journeys end quietly, leaving us with something to carry. For the fifth and final part of our workshop series, we began with a simple invitation of Think of someone who shaped who you are today. Their voice. Their smile. A place you shared. A familiar smell. A phrase they often said. And for a moment, we allowed that person to be present.

From there, the session unfolded through reflection, conversations and creating together. From simple materials came a Protector, a Companion Angel, a Memory Keeper and a Courage puppet with each carrying its own meaning.

It brings to mind the idea behind A Colour That Is ‘Not’ A Colour, where black is first seen only as something dark, but eventually finds its place as part of something beautiful. It becomes the night sky that allows the stars to be seen.

Perhaps grief can grow in a similar way. It may begin as a colour that seems to cover everything. But slowly, with time, love and a safe place to be held, other colours begin to find their way back in.

The grief does not have to disappear for life to grow around it. There can be sadness and laughter. Missing and remembering. Tears and new memories. Holding on and moving forward.

And perhaps that is what continuing bonds reminds us where growth does not mean forgetting. We can make room for both love and life, carrying what matters with us as we continue forward.

As we came to the end of these five workshops, I felt especially grateful for everyone who journeyed through them; for showing up, playing, creating, reflecting, sharing, laughing, remembering and sometimes simply sitting with whatever emerged.

We may have reached the end of this five-part series, but perhaps we each leave carrying something like a memory to keep or a little more courage to continue. Also, the reminder that love does not have to be left behind for life to grow. Sometimes, we simply learn to carry it differently.

Thank you to everyone who walked this journey with us and brought a little of yourselves into each session.
Till we meet again in the next session. May we continue to hold gently, let grow, and carry love forward.

💙 Thank You, Hospital Ampang & PPHA 💙

On 3 August 2026, MAPPAC was honoured to set up an Awareness Booth during the 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫, organised by Persatuan Pediatrik Hospital Ampang (PPHA).

A special thank you to our volunteer, Michael Tan, and MCH KL Nurse, Elaine and Xin Yi for supporting the booth.

During the seminar, MAPPAC President, Dr Lee Chee Chan, shared his insights on paediatric palliative care, while Nurse Xin Yi from MCH KL presented "Bridging Hospital and Home: The Strategic Role of the Children's Hospice." Their sessions highlighted the importance of collaborative, community-centred care for children with life limiting illness.

We were truly encouraged by the overwhelming response at our booth. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn more about MAPPAC, purchased our merchandise, and supported us by getting a copy of our handbook. It was inspiring to meet so many healthcare professionals who are passionate and dedicated to advancing paediatric palliative care. We hope the knowledge and connections gained through the seminar will continue to strengthen the care provided to children and their families.

Finally, our heartfelt appreciation to Persatuan Pediatrik Hospital Ampang for the invitation and for organising such a meaningful seminar. Thank you for creating a valuable platform for healthcare professionals to learn, connect, and grow together.

Not every act of kindness happens in a hospital. Sometimes, it begins in a neighbourhood café.

From May to July 2026, Haven Coffee, together with Mr Toh and his team, opened their space to help more people learn about paediatric palliative care and the work of MAPPAC.

Every table carried a MAPPAC brochure. A small corner displayed our books, merchandise, and information about children's palliative care. More importantly, Mr Toh and his team took the initiative to introduce MAPPAC to their customers and share why this work matters.

There wasn't a big campaign or a grand event. Just genuine conversations over a cup of coffee.

That is how awareness grows.

One brochure picked up. One question asked. One conversation started.

Thank you, Mr Toh and the Haven Coffee team, for believing that every community has a part to play in supporting children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Together, we hope more people will know that no family has to walk this journey alone. 💙

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧?

On 4 July 2026, 12 participants joined us at MAPPAC HQ for "When Conversations Feel Heavy: Guiding Children Through Difficult Topics". Facilitated by Ms Seetha, Certified Play Therapist, and Clinical Supervisor, PTUK.

🐘 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦.

Not one wanted to chase it away.
Not one wanted to make it smaller.
Just one that had been waiting... to be seen.

We often think children don't know. So, we whisper. We change the subject. We wait until "they are older." We tell ourselves we are protecting them.

But children are remarkable observers.

They notice:
👜 The hospital bag by the door.
🪑 The empty chair at dinner.
😢 The tears that are quickly wiped away.
🤍 When a name is no longer spoken.

When we don't acknowledge the elephant, children don't stop noticing. They simply begin carrying it alone.

🧸 During the workshop, the room became more than a learning space.

A teddy bear became a little child asking,
"Where is daddy?"

A puppet became a child quietly wondering,
"Why is everybody crying?"

Through:
✨ Role play
✨ Soft toys
✨ Puppets
✨ Unfinished stories
✨ Shared reflections

Something shifted.

The toys weren't just toys anymore. They became the voices of children asking the questions many adults are afraid to answer.

💭 Then something else happened.

The room grew quieter.

Stories began to emerge.
* Stories of siblings who were still grieving years later.
* Stories of questions that had never been answered.
* Stories of conversations that never happened.

In that moment, we realised that perhaps the elephant in the room isn't about illness, death, or grief.

Perhaps the elephant is our fear of talking about them.

Children are not asking us to make the elephant disappear.

They are asking us to stop pretending it is not there, to sit beside it with them, and say,

"Yes... this is hard, and I'm here." ❤️

Because healing does not begin with the perfect explanation.

Healing begins the moment a child discovers they no longer have to carry the question by themselves.

💛 Thank you to every participant who courageously joined the session. You stepped into the role of a child through play, spoke through a teddy bear, found your voice through a puppet, and reminded one another that play is never "just play."

Sometimes it is a teddy bear that asks the question a child cannot.

Sometimes it is a puppet that says the words that have been trapped inside.

And sometimes, the bravest thing an adult can do is stop walking around the elephant, and choose to sit beside it with a child.

"Children do not need adults with perfect words. They need adults who are willing to stay when the conversation becomes heavy."
