The Department of Environment (DOE) has rejected the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed Jelutong landfill rehabilitation and reclamation project.

JEDI welcomes the decision and highlights the importance of protecting the ecologically sensitive Middle Bank seagrass area, while calling on the Penang State Government to consider gazetting the area as a sensitive marine environmental zone before any future development proposals are considered.

Esok, Selasa, 10 Mac 2026, Mahkamah Rayuan akan membuat keputusan bagi kes rayuan terhadap Kebenaran Merancang projek tambakan laut Penang South Reclamation (PSR).

Ini bukan kes biasa. Ini antara kes paling penting dalam sejarah Pulau Pinang kerana melibatkan masa depan laut, alam sekitar, sumber rezeki nelayan, dan hala tuju pembangunan negeri ini.

Ini adalah perjuangan rakyat biasa yang bangkit mempertahankan laut dan kehidupan mereka berdepan kuasa besar — kuasa politik, pemaju, dan kepentingan korporat. Apa yang sedang berlaku ini ialah sejarah rakyat yang sedang ditulis.

Kami memohon doa dan harapan semua agar keputusan esok akan memihak kepada rakyat, kepada keadilan, dan kepada mereka yang hidupnya bergantung pada laut.

Who really benefits from UPOV?

🌊 What’s really at the bottom of Penang’s sea? 🌊

For one month, Pertubuhan Jaringan Ekologi dan Iklim (JEDI) together with Pengkalan Nelayan Paramount worked with two local fishermen. Every piece of trash caught in their nets was brought back to shore, stored, sorted, and audited.
