Looking back at a weekend well spent for International Macaque Week! ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒŸ

This year, we hosted two back-to-back educational programmes, exploring the incredible world of our primate neighbours through two very different lenses๐Ÿ‘‡

We headed into the rainforest of Taman Eko Rimba Bukit Mertajam (Cherok Tokun) to explore the intricate relationship between humans, monkeys, and nature. We experienced firsthand how physical connection with the natural world opens hearts and minds to conservation. Through fun and immersive activities, our participants experienced what it was like to be "citizen scientists" for a day - getting hands on with binoculars, learning how to "read" monkey expressions, and even setting up camera traps!๐Ÿ˜Ž (who said learning about nature can't be fun?!๐Ÿ˜†)

Magic does happens when sustainable farming meets wildlife conservation! We had an unforgettable day at the Inno Eco Durian Farm, where we explored the intersection of agriculture and wildlife. A huge thanks to Mr. Chang of Inno Eco Durian Farm for showing us how sustainable farming supports a balanced ecosystem. We also shared about our latest e-comic, "The Story of Sebastian," to highlight the important message of Primates are NOT Pets!๐Ÿšซโ›”

Whether we were under the rainforest canopy or surrounded by the aroma of durians, our goal remained the same: Fostering peaceful human-monkey coexistenceโœจ To all participants who joined us this round, thank YOU for this weekend a success. Your support makes our mission possible! โค๏ธ

Stay tuned...The Connection 5.0 might be closer than you think! ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿƒ

Durians and Monkeys - LPPโ€™s favourite duo! ๐Ÿคฉ

Did you know that agriculture plays an important role in upholding the concept of coexistence between humans and wildlife? Most people donโ€™t realize the connection, but we witnessed it firsthand at Inno Eco Durian Farm!๐Ÿค—

Since durian farms and other fruit orchards often share borders with forests where our wildlife friends live, it is vital to respect their space by minimising our impact on their habitat๐ŸŒณ Inno Eco Durian Farmโ€™s initiative in organic durian farming demonstrates that sustainable agriculture can thrive alongside nature, striking a balanced ecosystem where wildlife and people thrive together ๐Ÿ’

We learned so much from Mr. Chang, the owner of Inno Eco Durian. His farm was incredibly beautiful, and the durians hanging on the trees were irresistible! ๐Ÿ™Š (now we know why the monkeys are always hanging around fruit orchards ๐Ÿ‘€)

LPP also managed to share โ€œThe Story of Sebastianโ€ with our participants! We learnt about the various primate species and their special characteristics, different monkey expressions, and walked through Sebastianโ€™s life story as a pig-tailed macaque in Cherok Tokun, understanding the important message that Primates Are NOT Pets!๐ŸŒŸ

This was our first time hosting this unique educational programme, and we hope itโ€™s the first of many! Thank you to everyone who joined us - your support makes this a mission possibleโœ…โค๏ธ

A little throwback to The Connection 4.0 Rainforest Programme ๐ŸŒŸ

At LPP, we believe that nurturing the love for nature in early childhood is the key to fostering future generations that will actively protect and advocate for the environment ๐ŸŒณ A chance to be with nature physically opens minds and hearts to connect with the natural world deeply ๐Ÿ’š

Instilling the love for nature in our children is important, but conservation isnโ€™t just for kids. We should all remain lifelong learners to spread environmental awareness to our loved ones and become a guide for our children who will follow our footsteps ๐Ÿ‘ซ After all, knowledge is infinite!

Let's enjoy this short video summary of the rainforest programme we had on the 2nd of May โฃ๏ธ

Maybe you can join us at The Connection 5.0 (soon!) ๐Ÿ‘€

Endangered? But theyโ€™re everywhere! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Itโ€™s a common sight where long-tailed macaques line our roads, exploring our neighbourhoods, or even rummaging through rubbish bins. It feels like they are everywhere, but this high visibility is actually a sign of the species in crisis โŒ

We see them more often, not because their population is growing, but because their forest homes are shrinking day by day. These highly adaptable and intelligent species are trying their best to survive in this human-impacted world ๐Ÿ’. Globally, their numbers are decreasing, where they are listed as โ€œEndangeredโ€ in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red Listโ€ผ๏ธ

Swipe to see why "common" doesn't always mean "abundant", and it might just change the way you see our wildlife neighbours. Letโ€™s choose kindness and compassion, one step at a time towards a better coexistence for all๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

Have you ever pictured yourself as a long-tailed macaque? ๐Ÿง

Our team at LPP has been studying the long-tailed macaques at Cherok Tokun for years! We uncovered their unique looks and quirky personalities, especially the members of our focus study group, the Pirate Gang! Now, itโ€™s your turn to find your macaque match and see the wild side of your own character! ๐Ÿ’

In LPP, we cherish every macaque as a unique individual. When we learn to see the world through their eyes, we will begin to . After all, we beings share these forests and urban edges. Letโ€™s lead our lives with empathy and care for the neighbours we live alongside with ๐ŸŒŸ

Do you really know what a MACAQUE is? ๐Ÿ’โ“

Let us tell you more about them!

In the primate world, macaques consist of more than 20 species spread across the globe. They are known for their high intelligence, incredible adaptability, and complex social hierarchies. While species like the long-tailed macaques are often misunderstood as mischievous creatures, it is crucial for us to foster empathy and awareness towards these important species. ๐Ÿ’š

International Macaque Week brings these primates into the spotlight for the public to cherish them and advocate for their protection. It is a time to appreciate their resilience and ensure that these intelligent primates are no longer misunderstood, but rather respected as essential members of our natural heritage.๐ŸŒŸ

Letโ€™s leap into their world and understand them better to foster a more harmonious coexistence! ๐Ÿค

p/s: Featuring our beloved long-tailed macaque, Little Dragon Girl from the Pirate study group of LPP, headlining our poster!

Taking our โ€˜Bridge to Coexistโ€™ story to NRES! ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒณ

We were incredibly honoured today to co-host, alongside Jabatan PERHILITAN Semenanjung Malaysia Penang, a visit from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), led by Deputy Minister, YB Timbalan Menteri Tuan Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, to witness firsthand the impact of our road canopy bridges in Penang. We were so happy to once again welcome YB Dato Seri Sundarajoo Somu (Penang State EXCO for Housing and Environment) to join us for this visit today too! ๐Ÿคฉ

From our first two bridges, to the latest โ€˜The Obscuraโ€™ in Batu Ferringhi, we shared about our experiences, history and data showing how these simple man-made structures have become vital for our wildlife and how citizen science, community conservation efforts, and environmental education are essential for managing the interactions between humans and monkeys in urban areas of Malaysia. ๐Ÿ’š

Seeing the Ministryโ€™s interest in LPP conservation efforts fills us with immense hope. We will always remember the encouragement by YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim to us in LPP:

"The LPP project is more than just building bridges, but there are many years of stories about research, community outreach, people and monkeys behind the scenes that help us improve our ways of coexisting with nature. Keep it up, LPP!" โœจ

A huge thank you to the YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim and his NRES team for their time, their profound engagement, and their commitment to exploring innovative ways to conserve Malaysiaโ€™s biodiversity. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Environment. People. Monkeys. One shared future for Penang. ๐ŸŒโœจ

This morning was amazing - We had the privilege to meet up with the Honourable YB Dato Seri Sundarajoo Somu (Penang State EXCO for Housing and Environment) at the Penang State Government Council Member's Office. ๐Ÿ’š

We received YB Dato' Seri Sundarajoo Somu's acknowledgement and support on LPPโ€™s conservation initiatives and projects, especially on the third road canopy bridge, The Obscura, alongside Encik Mohd Husaini Bin Saad, Special Officer to YB Dato' Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Tuan Mohd Zaide Bin Mohamed Zin, Director of PERHILITAN Penang, and Puan Siti Nur Ain bt Mohd Isa, the Deputy Director of PERHILITAN Penang.

The involvement of the Penang State Government is essential in creating meaningful conservation actions and increasing public awareness across the state ๐ŸŒŸ

YB Dato' Seri Sundarajoo Somu demonstrated a profound understanding of LPPโ€™s conservation initiatives and showed a commitment to environmental stewardship, as well as a deep empathy for the welfare of Penangโ€™s wildlife. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป

We are deeply grateful for his insights, and we look forward to further collaboration that will significantly promote coexistence between humans and wildlife ๐Ÿ’
