For the past 26 years, Persatuaan Jagaan OKU Bukit Baru Melaka has been a home for the less fortunate in Melaka. Relying heavily on donations, the home has been working tirelessly to provide food and care to some of the most unfortunate handicaps in Melaka. According to the home operator, Mr Alex, with 22 residents, cost for food and utilities is always a challenge. The home spends, an average of RM1000 per month on electricity alone.
Heeding this need for support, the Rotary Club of Kota Melaka came up with a novel solution to support them. Having helped them with donations for the past few years, we looked beyond solving the immediate need for funds but to look for alternative solutions. This was when President Dennis suggested providing solar panels to the home to bring down the cost. This would ensure the home will be continuously supported on the electrical bills with a clean and sustainable source of power.
The idea was visionary, bold and impactful. However, much work had to be done for it to work. To ensure the suitability of the project, the building had to be studied and checked to be sure that it could be fitted with the panels. Agreements and confirmations had to be sorted to ensure that the installations were approved by all parties involved, including the local municipal council and other government agencies.
Lastly, funds had to be raised to purchase and pay for the installation of the panels. The club had to work on reaching out to private donors and sponsors to help finance the project. Thankfully, the idea was well received by the local community and business leaders. Rotary District 3310 chipped in to support with funds as well. Even the panel installers, Ortus Synergy Sdn Bhd, offered discounts to help bring down the installation cost. In a space of three months, RM28000 of funds were raised, sufficient to complete the project.
On 22 April, the installations were finally completed with 20 solar panels were installed. This is expected to reduce the electrical cost for the home by RM650 per month for the next 25 years. A big shout out to all the donors and Rotarians who help support this project… a very meaningful and insightful project for Rotary Club of Kota Melaka indeed.
