The Great Milarepa (c. 1052–1135) is one of the most revered masters in Tibetan Buddhism, especially within the Kagyu tradition. He is celebrated as a symbol of transformation, perseverance, and enlightenment.

Why Milarepa is famous
As a young man, he learned black magic and used it for revenge after his family was mistreated following his father's death.

Deeply remorseful, he sought spiritual guidance from Marpa Lotsawa, who subjected him to years of difficult training to purify his negative karma.

After receiving teachings, Milarepa practiced intensive meditation in remote mountain caves and attained enlightenment in a single lifetime according to Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

He became renowned for his spontaneous "Songs of Realization"—poetic teachings expressing profound spiritual insight.

Traditional Iconography
Milarepa is usually depicted:
Sitting in a relaxed yogic posture.
Wearing a simple white cotton robe.
With his right hand cupped to his ear, symbolizing listening to the songs of realization and the Dharma.
Often with a slightly greenish complexion, reflecting the legend that he survived for long periods eating only nettles during retreat.
A famous teaching attributed to Milarepa
"My religion is to live and die without regret."
His life is regarded as proof that even someone who has committed grave mistakes can transform completely through sincere practice, devotion to a qualified teacher, and meditation.

For many Tibetan Buddhists, Milarepa is the supreme example of a yogi who attained Buddhahood through unwavering determination and solitary meditation.
