My statement on behalf of Kuching Division Cycling Association in response to recent viral clips involving cyclists on social media in Sarawak.
MEDIA STATEMENT
KUCHING DIVISION CYCLING ASSOCIATION (KDCA)
Let’s Get the Facts Right Before Jumping to Conclusions
The Kuching Division Cycling Association (KDCA) refers to a recent social media post depicting 3 cyclists riding in the right-hand lane of a road in Kuching and portraying the situation as dangerous and an improper use of a so-called “fast lane”.
Unfortunately, the post appears to have been published without first understanding the actual circumstances on the ground.
Clarification:
Based on information subsequently obtained, the cyclists were travelling in a lane leading towards a signalised intersection and designated for vehicles intending to turn right. In such circumstances, all road users are required to position themselves in the appropriate lane according to their intended direction of travel.
Not every right-hand lane is a fast lane. Not every right-hand lane is an overtaking lane.
Many right-hand lanes exist for turning movements, lane positioning before intersections, traffic management purposes, and directional flow. The mere presence of cyclists in a right-hand lane does not, by itself, mean that any offence has been committed or that traffic has been obstructed unreasonably.
What is more concerning is the manner in which the post was presented, creating the impression that wrongdoing had occurred despite the full facts not being known.
When incomplete narratives are published, assumptions quickly become accepted as facts, public sentiment becomes inflamed, and hostility towards certain groups of road users begins to grow.
Road Safety Must Unite, Not Divide
As can be seen from the comments generated by the post, a number of responses contained insults, threats, and remarks that may be interpreted as encouraging hostility towards cyclists.
This is not road safety awareness. This is creating division among road users.
If the objective is genuinely to improve road safety, discussions must be based on facts, education, and mutual respect… not assumptions, provocation, or incomplete narratives.
Cyclists are legitimate road users and have the same right to use public roads as motorists, motorcyclists, and other road users.
They are members of our community: fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, colleagues, and friends. Any form of intimidation, threats, or encouragement of dangerous behaviour towards cyclists has no place in a responsible and civilised society.
KDCA consistently reminds the cycling community to obey traffic laws, ride responsibly, and show courtesy and respect to all other road users.
Respect Must Go Both Ways
Road safety is a shared responsibility.
If we truly want safer roads in Kuching and the whole of Sarawak, we must move away from blaming one another and instead foster a culture of mutual respect, patience, understanding, and responsible road use.
At the same time, KDCA calls upon media platforms, content creators, and community pages to exercise greater responsibility when reporting incidents involving road users.
Content designed to provoke outrage may generate views, comments, and engagement, but it does little to improve road safety or public understanding. Instead, it risks deepening divisions and reinforcing negative perceptions between different groups of road users.
KDCA will continue to champion its “Let’s Share The Road” campaign and advocate for safer, more respectful, and more inclusive roads for everyone.
Let’s Share The Road. Respect All Road Users.

Peringatan: Kalau tak pasti, jangan kongsi. Always fact check the information before posting. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.
Peringatan:
Bersukan / berbasikal memang baik untuk kesihatan — tetapi sila utamakan keselamatan diri dan orang lain.
Jangan menyusahkan pengguna jalan raya yang lain.
