What is an animal welfare NGO?
An animal welfare NGO exists for one reason above all others: to protect and advance the welfare of animals.
Its legitimacy does not come from grants, titles, access to officials, media exposure or proximity to power. It derives its moral authority from its willingness to advocate for animals and the courage to speak up when inconvenient, unpopular or contrary to prevailing policies.
The concern is particularly acute when it comes to stray animal management. Decades of international evidence have shown that indiscriminate culling does not provide a sustainable solution to stray populations.
The warning signs are familiar: criticism of authorities becomes muted or disappears altogether; transparency gives way to defensiveness; legitimate questions are treated as attacks; maintaining relationships with those in power takes precedence over speaking uncomfortable truths and advocacy is non-existent.
Because the moment an animal welfare NGO becomes more concerned with preserving its standing with power than speaking up for those without a voice, it risks losing the very purpose for which it was created.
And hence have lost its moral compass and credibility as an NGO among the stakeholders.
