❓Why not apply for government land or funding?

📖Government support can be helpful, but it often comes with changing policies, limitations, or short-term frameworks. The Fund a Land with Kongsi movement is about building an independent, community-driven model that can endure beyond policy cycles.

At the same time, we feel that if something is truly important for the future, it is more meaningful for the community to take part in making it real. This creates a deeper sense of responsibility - not just for today, but for what we leave behind.

Sauerkraut for Fund a Land with Kongsi🌱

Jeremy and a groups of volunteers have been lovingly preparing homemade sauerkraut, with portion of the proceeds to the movement.

How can you enjoy sauerkraut?
Pair it with rice, porridge, or noodles for a refreshing, tangy flavour.
Add it to salads, sandwiches, or wraps.
Stir or boil it into soups just before serving.
Mix a little into dips or spreads.
Blend a small amount into your smoothie for a probiotic boost.

Keep refrigerated and always use a clean, dry spoon when serving.

By purchasing a jar, you're not only bringing home a delicious fermented food—you are also supporting the protection of living soil and a farm that has been lovingly cared for over generations.

A heartfelt thank you to Jeremy and all the volunteers who have generously contributed their time and effort to this initiative. It is through these simple acts of collective care that the Fund a Land movement continues to grow.

❓What is a Community Land Trust (CLT)?

📖 A Community Land Trust is a way for the community to collectively care for land and protect it for future generations. Instead of land being owned by individuals and sold on the market, the land is held by a registered trust company to be appointed by Kongsi co-owners, which will hold the land ownership on behalf of the community. It ensures that land remains accessible, affordable, and purpose-driven. In simple terms: The land is not owned by individuals - it is held in trust for the community, and cared for by those who use it: from ownership to stewardship

Conventional Model - Ownership
• Land is bought and sold
• Value increases, prices go up
• Farmers rent short-term, with uncertainty
• Land may be sold or developed anytime
• Result: Land becomes a commodity, not a living resource

Community Land Trust Model - Stewardship
• Community comes together
• Land is placed in a trust
• Farmers receive long-term stewardship rights
• Land is cared for, not traded
• Result: Land is protected for farming, community, and future generations

In the context of Fund a Land with Kongsi movement:
• The land is owned by a registered trust company to safeguarded from being sold or developed away from its purpose
• The beneficiary is the community through Kongsi Co-op. Land is treated as a shared resource, not a commodity
• Farmers become caretakers of the land, not tenants under pressure. Farmers can care for the land without fear of losing it
• The land cannot be sold for profit, and remains protected for its intended purpose

When land is freed from the market, it can truly serve life.

❓Why should I join as a Kongsi Co-op co-owner to contribute to Fund a Land? Isn’t it complicated?

📖 We understand it may feel unfamiliar. But we chose this path because we have seen what happens when land is owned individually - it can be easily sold for speculation and profit maximisation.

Co-ownership by a wider community is what ensures the land is collectively held and protected from future sale for money. As a Kongsi co-owner, your contribution becomes part of a shared stewardship structure. By holding it together, we are trying to ensure the land is protected beyond any individual so it can continue serving generations to come.

Kongsi Co-op has recently completed our 4th Annual General Meeting.

Our AGM is not just a formal gathering to review reports and make decisions. It is also a moment to reflect on how far we have come, and more importantly, what kind of community we are becoming.

There was an unexpected and touching moment. Without any announcement or fundraising appeal, several co-owners (Samaria Organic, Just ferment, , TanChengCheng, AnnLai) quietly chose to contribute their proceeds from the day to Fund a Land. What mattered was not the amount, but the thought behind it. Because they cared, they remembered. Because it mattered to them, they chose to take action.

This is the spirit of a cooperative.
A cooperative is not built only through structures or rules. It is built when people see something that matters and choose to contribute in their own way. Every act of care becomes part of a collective journey.

In the same spirit of collective support, we are also offering a meaningful calligraphy artwork featuring the words 「同舟共济」by for sale, with proceeds supporting Fund a Land. The words remind us that we are travelling in the same boat, and through mutual support and shared responsibility, we can move forward together.

If this artwork speaks to you, we welcome you to bring it home while contributing to the preservation of farmland for future generations.

FAQ Series

❓WHY can’t farmers buy the land themselves?

📖 Many of the farmers we work with are already giving their full energy to growing clean, responsible food. To also carry the burden of land ownership, at today’s prices, is truly overwhelming. We have seen how this pressure leads to short-term decisions, or even farmers giving up. Rapid rising of land prices make it nearly impossible, especially for those committed to organic, biodynamic and regenerative practices, who are not focusing on short term returns. Many farmers end up renting land on short leases, which creates instability and discourages long-term soil care that is essential for growing good food for future generations.

The Fund a Land with Kongsi movement is our way of saying: Let farmers focus on caring for the land, while we, the community, hold the land together and for those who come after us as well.

The Fund a Land with Kongsi movement is dedicated to securing land for long-term stewardship, not to take over or manage farm operations. Farms such as GK Organic Farm, the first land supported by this movement, continue to operate independently, preserving their knowledge, practices, and integrity while being safeguarded from land insecurity.
