Empowering Malaysia's Top Startup Founders for Leadership and Growth

08/05/2026

A big thank you to Yen Ming Lee, CEO, Director & Co-founder of PolicyStreet, for an insightful and grounded sharing session on Driving Profitability in Challenging Times.

The conversation gave a very real look into what it takes to build and scale a business, balancing ambition with discipline, making tough trade-offs across growth, hiring, and structure, and continuously adapting strategy as the company evolves.

What stood out most was how profitability is shaped not just by numbers, but by deliberate decisions in ex*****on, people, and distribution.

Key takeaways:

1. Focus before expansion – Win in one area first before scaling to others.

2. Embedded wins scale – Revenue grows faster when products are part of the customer journey.

3. Hire to match reality – Talent structure must align with current revenue stage.

4. Culture evolves with scale – From family-driven to performance-driven over time.

5. Distribution is the moat – Speed and channels matter more than permanent protection.

Appreciate the honest and practical sharing on the realities of building a scalable and profitable business.

Big thanks to Alvin Yuan from HealthMetrics for the candid and deeply insightful sharing at the Soonicorn Collective Circle session. Really appreciated how open he was in breaking down not just the wins, but also the tough decisions, mistakes, and realities of building and scaling across Southeast Asia..these are the kinds of conversations founders don’t get enough of.

Top 5 takeaways:

1. Your business model is more than your “main” revenue stream - real upside can come from how you structure payments, pricing mechanics, and transaction flow.

2. Choose investors for behavior, not just capital - the right partners show up during tough times, not just at signing.

3. “Easy markets” can be traps - Singapore proved harder than Indonesia due to local advantages and policy dynamics.

4. AI starts with leadership - no point having an AI team if founders and C-suite aren’t using it daily on real workflows.

5. You can say no - valuation is one thing, but control and long-term optionality matter more.

Thanks again Alvin for the generosity in sharing so openly, sessions like this are exactly what make the Soonicorn Collective community valuable. Looking forward to more of these honest, behind-the-scenes founder conversations.

A huge thank you to ERIC TAN, CEO of Catcha Digital, for sharing his invaluable insights with the Soonicorn founders on acquisitions, growth, and leadership at our last Circle session. It was a masterclass in understanding how disciplined acquirers think, what they value in a business, and how founders can prepare for meaningful partnerships. The conversation left our founders with practical lessons they can apply today and in the future.

Top 5 Takeaways:
1️⃣ Serial Acquirer Mindset – Focus on profitable, niche businesses and let them operate independently while centralizing capital.
2️⃣ Founder Psychology Matters – Buyers value trust, transparency, and alignment as much as financials.
3️⃣ Business Hygiene = Premium Valuation – Clean accounts, proper reporting, and predictable revenue drive higher offers.
4️⃣ Flexible Deal Structures – Upfront payment, earn-outs, and minority stakes can bridge valuation gaps and align incentives.
5️⃣ Strategic Growth Post-Acquisition – Leverage platform synergies or run independently; growth is measured, not flashy.

Grateful for Eric’s sharing—reminding us that M&A isn’t just about price, but about trust, culture, and long-term value creation.

Soonicorn Collective kicked off the year with new members, a growing community, and exciting programmes.

Last week, we hosted the Titan100+ Catalyst Immersion, a focused 3-day workshop designed to help leaders align on strategy, sharpen ex*****on, and set growth priorities for the year ahead.

Beyond the sessions, what really stood out were the connections, peer support, collaborations, and relationships that grew outside the formal sessions. A powerful start to the year for our founders and the Soonicorn Collective community!

Soonicorn Kicks Off 2026 with Returning Alumni Melvin Chee from RPG Commerce!

We had the privilege of hosting Melvin, for a Soonicorn session. Melvin shared his incredible journey — from starting young, building multiple businesses, navigating early success in dropshipping, to pivoting into consumer brand building with Montego. His transparency about the highs, lows, and lessons from scaling a regional brand was both inspiring and eye-opening.

Here are the top 5 lessons for entrepreneurs in 2026:

1. Profitability First – Don’t scale unless your core unit economics are solid. Growth without profit can lead to cashflow stress and sleepless nights.

2. Distribution is King – Combine online and retail channels. Retail builds brand trust; online expands reach, and together they drive sustainable growth.

3. Focus Beats Diversification – Prioritize your core brand. Killing distractions and doubling down is key to scaling successfully.

4. Build Real Relationships – Success in new markets or tough times depends on networks, credibility, and mentorship.

5. Evolve Leadership – As your business grows, the CEO’s role shifts to strategy, partnerships, and value creation, not daily operations.

A huge thank you to Melvin for returning as an alumni and sharing his journey and insights with the Soonicorn community!

A big thank you to Gil Carmo for an inspiring and grounded conversation with the Soonicorn Collective.

Hearing how Gil and the iMotorbike team built trust, structure, and scale in a fragmented two-wheeler market gave us a fresh reminder of what real ex*****on looks like in Southeast Asia.

We appreciate the honesty in sharing the tough parts too - from solving deep market pain, building the right partner ecosystem, managing cross-border realities, to shaping a funding strategy that supports sustainable growth.

Plenty for all of us at the Soonicorn Collective to reflect on as we build our own paths forward.

Thanks again, Gil, for making the session truly valuable for our founders.
