Mahavidya Dance Theatre

Mahavidya Dance Theatre MDT is a non-profit organisation that promotes Bharatanatyam, an ancient Indian classical dance form

Mahavidya Dance Theatre or MDT has been actively involved in the promotion of traditional performing arts. MDT uses multimedia techniques to promote and preserve traditional performing arts. These techniques have been specially developed with input from diverse individuals comprising historians, scholars, performers, graphics specialists, to help reach out to a wider audience and also for archivin

g purposes. MDT promotes performing arts to all children, irrespective of their background. There is a wealth of talent in Malaysia but limited opportunity, particularly for those from poor socio-economic backgrounds. MDT is trying to bridge this gap through its programmes, and also to raise the standard of classical arts in Malaysia. MDT has staged several performances in Malaysia to raise funds for its programmes. These performances have been carried out with the support of the Indian Cultural Council, High Commission of India, and the National Arts, Culture & Heritage Academy of Malaysia (ASWARA). Entire proceeds from these concerts are used to support the teaching of classical arts to less privileged children, completely free of charge,. MDT’s students who have studied classical arts for the past 12 years are now beginning to perform in public, including at international events such as the International Freedom Film Festival, Rotary Club (International Gathering), etc. MDT’s team is multi-ethnic specifically to ensure that everyone understands and appreciates traditional performing arts.

We, Mahavidya Dance Theatre (MDT), are organising a Bharatanatyam dance drama called “Ayodhya Putra” based on the Ramayana on 28 June at Kala Mandapam, Brickfields. It’s with live orchestra and we are incorporating a Digital Screen to provide English subtitling. This is to ensure our heritage resonates with the wider community.

This performance is not just an event. It supports MDT, where children are given free classical dance education, especially those who otherwise wouldn’t have access.

In supporting this initiative and we would really appreciate if you could:

Happy Deepavali to all!

THE narrow flights of stairs leading to the aikido centre offer no hint of the evening’s surprise. The climb is steep, yet the children weaving past us sprint upwards, breathless with excitement.
