Hello again, it’s Birch! 😻
Birch is our rescue from back in 2021, and she has cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). She was born with a cerebellum that didn’t fully develop, which is the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination. That’s why she wobbles, sways, and sometimes tumbles. CH isn’t painful, it isn’t contagious, and it doesn’t get worse over time. She’s happy just the way she is.
Birch was adopted, and then returned. The reason? She was peeing outside her litter box. This is not her normal behavior. Nobody asked why. At least, no one asked us to try to help troubleshoot. She was just sent away, because her sudden change in behavior was an inconvenience.
Going outside the box is almost never spite or bad behavior. It’s communication. It could be a UTI, a box that’s too high to balance in (a big deal for CH cats!), the wrong litter, stress from changes in the home, or too few boxes.
Pets are for life, through thick and thin. We don’t send them away for doing something we don’t like. We get curious, investigate, and find the root cause, because behavior is information. We adapt our home to meet their needs, because they can’t adapt it for themselves.
Birch has had no peeing issues since returning to us and moving to her foster home. She is available for adoption again, to someone who is willing to accept her and more importantly, promises to stay through all the good and the bad. She is about 6 years old, FIV & FeLV negative and recently had her annual health check, all good. She is available as a solo cat or to a home with a non-dominant, easy-going cat.
