Key issues include:
- explosion of synthetic drugs,
- record-breaking co***ne production,
- significant gaps in access to treatment,
amongst others...

Major Global Drug Trends and Issues

Expansion of Synthetic Drugs: The synthetic drug market is expanding due to low production costs and high profit margins. Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) and synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, dominate this market.

Co***ne Production Surge: Global co***ne production hit a record 3,708 tons in 2023, up 34% from 2022. Traffickers are expanding into new markets, with violence spreading from Latin America to Western Europe.

Record Drug Use: Drug use is outpacing global population growth, with nearly 6% of the world's population aged 15–64 using drugs in 2023.

Treatment Gap: Despite 64 million people suffering from drug use disorders, only 1 in 12 received treatment in 2023.

Conflict and Instability: Geopolitical instability is providing opportunities for trafficking, particularly in conflict zones like Syria (Captagon production) and Myanmar (methamphetamine).

Environmental Damage: Drug cultivation and production are causing significant environmental harm, including deforestation and pollution from toxic waste disposal, particularly in Europe.

O***m Shift: Despite a drastic 95% reduction in Afghan o***m production in 2023 due to a ban, production increased between 2023 and 2024, yet remained over 90% below pre-ban levels.
