About WoW-KL

WoW-KL (World of Words Kuala Lumpur) is a Malaysian reading and literary movement dedicated to reviving reading culture through storytelling, ideas, imagination and meaningful public conversations. What began as a literary festival has evolved into a growing platform connecting readers, educators, schools, universities, authors, publishers, book clubs and cultural voices across Malay

sia. Through forums, workshops, awards, storytelling initiatives and public engagement, WoW-KL seeks to make reading relevant, accessible and inspiring again for a new generation.

Some people change lives with money.

Some change lives with power.

Some change lives with words.

Think about it for a moment.

Who was the person who sparked your curiosity?

The teacher who introduced you to a book that opened a new world.

The parent who read to you before bedtime.

The mentor who challenged you to think differently.

The librarian who always seemed to know the perfect book.

The author whose words stayed with you long after you turned the final page.

Someone came to mind, didn't they?

Tag them below.

At WoW-KL, we believe that reading is more than a pastime. It is a pathway to imagination, empathy, knowledge and leadership.

The WoW-KL Awards 2026 seek to recognise the individuals, organisations and communities who are helping to build a better society through reading, literature and storytelling.

If someone came to mind when you read this, perhaps it's time to thank them.

And perhaps it's time to recognise them.

Books have always done more than tell stories.

They start conversations.
They connect strangers.
They create communities built on ideas, imagination and shared reflection.

In a world where people are increasingly disconnected from one another, reading still has the power to bring people together in meaningful ways.

This is one of the things we hope to build through WoW-KL.

Not just a festival.
Not just a series of talks.

But a growing community of readers, thinkers, educators, students, writers and everyday people who still believe that stories matter.

Because cultures are not built by algorithms alone.

They are built by conversations people choose to have together.

Every reader begins somewhere.

In a classroom.
In a library.
At a festival.
Through a story that suddenly feels personal.

The future of reading culture will not be rebuilt through campaigns alone.

It will be rebuilt through moments of curiosity.
Through conversations.
Through young people discovering ideas that stay with them long after the pages are closed.

This is why WoW-KL exists.

To create spaces where stories are not treated as distractions, but as doorways to imagination, confidence, empathy and thought.

Because when young people begin to read, they also begin to question, reflect, dream and lead.

And every society needs a generation that can still imagine a better future.

There was a time when reading was part of everyday life.

Today, we scroll endlessly, consume constantly, and move from one distraction to another without ever sitting still long enough to truly reflect.

But reading does something different.

It slows us down.
It deepens thought.
It expands imagination.
It teaches empathy.
It allows us to step into lives, ideas and worlds beyond our own.

A society that reads does not just become more informed.
It becomes more thoughtful, more creative and more human.

At WoW-KL, we believe reading is not an old habit that is disappearing.

It is a human need that must be rediscovered.

Because stories still matter.
And people who read still shape the future.

There was a time when stories shaped how we thought, imagined and understood the world.

Today, attention is shrinking.
Conversations are becoming shorter.
Reading is slowly disappearing from everyday life.

WoW-KL was created because we believe reading still matters.

Not just for education.
But for empathy.
For imagination.
For ideas.
For leadership.
For the future of society itself.

What began as a literary festival is now growing into a movement that brings together readers, educators, students, authors, publishers, book clubs and communities who believe that stories still have the power to change people.

WoW-KL is not simply about books.

It is about rebuilding a culture of curiosity, thought and meaningful human connection.

This is only the beginning.

Malaysia can become a nation that reads again.
