Persatuan Hemodialisis Kinabalu Sabah - PHKS

Persatuan Hemodialisis Kinabalu Sabah - PHKS Warmest greetings from PERSATUAN HEMODIALISIS KINABALU, SABAH ! To continue providing this essential service, we rely on the generosity of the community.

Join Us in Supporting Persatuan Hemodialisis Kinabalu (PHKS) – A Lifeline for Kidney Failure Patients

At Persatuan Hemodialisis Kinabalu, Sabah (PHKS), we are dedicated to providing life-saving hemodialysis treatments to individuals living with kidney failure. Currently, our center operates 18 dialysis machines, which play a crucial role in the lives of patients who require regular dialysis sessi

ons to stay alive. Each dialysis session is physically demanding, lasting up to four or five hours, and patients must undergo this treatment three times a week. For many of them, this routine can feel overwhelming as it interferes with their ability to maintain regular employment or care for their families. This is especially challenging for sole breadwinners, as their ability to work is severely impacted by the time and energy required for their treatments, often creating significant financial strain and emotional stress on the entire family. We understand the challenges these patients face, and we are deeply committed to offering affordable dialysis care to reduce their burden. We provide subsidized treatment costs based on the financial capabilities of each patient, ensuring that even the most financially vulnerable have access to life-saving care. Depending on their financial situation, patients may only need to pay as little as RM10 per session, compared to the RM150 to RM250 per session charged at private dialysis centers. However, despite these reduced rates, many of our patients—especially those who are unable to hold steady jobs due to their health—still struggle to afford the full cost of treatment. The True Cost of Dialysis Care

Running a hemodialysis center is a complex and costly undertaking, with each patient's treatment costing up to RM2,000 to RM4,000 per month, covering expenses such as the maintenance of dialysis machines, essential medical supplies like filters, needles, and tubing, and the salaries of our dedicated healthcare professionals—doctors, nurses, and technicians—who oversee treatments, ensure patient safety, and provide ongoing medical support. Despite the significant costs involved, PHKS, as a non-profit organization, absorbs a large portion of these expenses to ensure that patients do not face the heartbreaking decision of whether or not they can afford treatment. Our goal is to provide life-saving dialysis care to everyone who needs it, regardless of their financial situation. How Your Support Can Make a Difference

While we work hard to keep dialysis care as affordable as possible, the reality is that the costs of operation far exceed what we are able to charge patients. Your support, in whatever form, can have a profound impact on the lives of our patients. Financial Donations

One of the most effective ways to support PHKS is through financial contributions. Your donation can help cover the treatment costs for patients who are unable to afford even the subsidized rates. By contributing financially, you are directly helping to ease the burden on these patients and their families, allowing them to focus on their health rather than on the worry of how to pay for their next dialysis session. Donations of Medical Supplies or Equipment

Another vital way to help is by donating medical supplies or dialysis equipment. Items such as dialysis filters, blood pressure cuffs, gloves, and other essential materials are needed on a regular basis. Additionally, donations of dialysis machines or other major equipment can significantly reduce our operational expenses, enabling us to redirect more of our funds into patient care. Raising Awareness

Even if you are not in a position to donate financially or provide medical supplies, you can still make a significant impact by spreading awareness about our cause. By sharing our mission with friends, family, and colleagues, you can help us reach more people who may be in need of dialysis services or may be able to support us in other ways. Raising awareness about the challenges faced by kidney failure patients and the importance of accessible, affordable dialysis care is a powerful tool for driving positive change. The Impact of Your Contribution

Every contribution—whether big or small—makes a tangible difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Your generosity helps us ensure that dialysis remains accessible to those who need it most. For many of our patients, dialysis is not just a medical treatment; it is a lifeline that allows them to continue living and being part of their communities. By supporting PHKS, you are not only helping individuals, but you are also uplifting entire families, many of whom are already struggling with the physical, emotional, and financial challenges that come with kidney failure. Imagine the relief of a patient who no longer has to worry about missing a treatment session due to financial constraints, or the sense of hope in a family's heart when they know they will not have to choose between life-saving care and basic necessities. Your support allows us to continue providing consistent, high-quality care to those who need it most. Together, We Can Make a Difference

We invite you to join us in this important mission. Every donation, whether it is financial support, medical supplies, or raising awareness, helps us continue to provide life-saving dialysis treatment to those in need. Together, we can lighten the load for kidney failure patients and their families, allowing them to focus on what truly matters—health, well-being, and hope for a brighter future. If you would like to make a contribution or learn more about how you can help, please contact us or visit our website. Your support means the world to us and to the patients who rely on PHKS for their dialysis treatments. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and commitment to making a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.

📖Story Theme: Heartwarming Guardianship — Our Journey at the Dialysis Center

Walking into a dialysis center, it’s natural to feel a bit nervous about the unknown. But here, I’ve discovered a special kind of "guardian" watching over us. 🏥✨

It all begins with a **commitment to safety**. From the moment you step into the lobby, you know there’s a professional team dedicated to protecting every patient. Here, safety isn’t just a slogan; it’s reflected in the meticulous actions of every nurse. 🛡️🩺

This care is in the details. Take our dialysis machines—meticulously maintained and spotless, they serve as the foundation of our health and peace of mind. ✅⚙️

Seeing nurses and patients washing their hands, I realized this simple act is the "invisible armor" we build together. You are never alone during treatment; whether it’s gentle monitoring or a nurse👩‍⚕️’s warm smile, we are always supported. 🧼🫂💖

Here, your feelings always matter. Nurses👩‍⚕️ remind us, "If something doesn't feel right, please tell us." Every patient is a vital member of the team. This mutual trust makes the journey so much more positive. 🗣️🤝🌈

Looking back, every moment of safety comes from our collective effort. We are like a family, working together through every bright afternoon. Thank you to every guardian by our side—because of you, our peace of mind is incredibly precious. 🧡🥂✨

The Coffee ☕️Ritual in Dialysis Life 🌟

"Doctor, my morning cup of coffee ☕️ is the highlight of my day. Do I really have to give it up now that I'm on dialysis❓" ☕️💔

That morning, Mr. Q walked into the clinic, still instinctively clutching his empty coffee☕️ cup. There was a flicker of anxiety in his eyes, as if he were asking a life-or-death question. He’s not alone—many patients starting dialysis find that letting go of these small, cherished daily rituals is the hardest part of the adjustment. 🗓️✨

When faced with this question, my answer is always the same: "Dialysis doesn't mean saying goodbye to all of life's simple joys." 🕊️🌻

Many people assume that coffee☕️ is strictly off-limits, but that’s not entirely true. While coffee☕️ does contain potassium and phosphorus, it’s all about the "how" and "how much." If we learn how to enjoy it wisely, that warm cup can still be a comforting part of your routine. 🥣⚖️

It’s not just about the caffeine; it’s about the art of personalized management. Be wary of the "hidden culprits"—high-phosphorus creamers, syrups, and heavy cream. Choosing a simple black coffee and incorporating it into your daily fluid plan is often more practical than simply banning it. ☕️📋

Every patient’s journey is unique. Your blood pressure, potassium levels, and medications help shape your "personalized menu." Don’t cut out everything you love out of fear. Next time you come in, talk to our dietitian. Let’s work together to safely find a way to keep your morning ritual. 🙌✨

Doctor, Can I Still Eat Durian❓”

Every durian season, Mr. L asks the same question at the dialysis center.

As he watches his family enjoying fresh durian together, he can't help but miss the taste. After all, durian is one of Malaysia's 🇲🇾 most beloved fruits❗🟢❤️

🤔 Does having kidney disease mean saying goodbye to durian forever❓

The answer is not always.

Whether a kidney patient can eat durian depends on their kidney function, potassium levels, and the advice of their doctor or dietitian.

🟢 Why Should Kidney Patients Be Careful with Durian❓

Durian contains a relatively high amount of potassium. Healthy kidneys remove excess potassium from the body, but when kidney function declines, potassium can build up in the bloodstream.

⚠️ High potassium levels may affect the 🫀heart's normal rhythm and, in severe cases, can become life-threatening.

✅ Patients with early-stage kidney disease and normal potassium levels*may be able to enjoy small portions with medical guidance.

⚠️ Dialysis patients or those with elevated potassium levels should be much more careful.

❌ Eating large amounts of durian at one time is generally not recommended.

😅 Many people think, “Just one more piece won't hurt,” but while chatting with family and friends, that small portion can quickly become several pieces!

💕 Living with kidney disease doesn't always mean giving up your favorite foods forever.

The key is understanding your health condition, practicing moderation, and following the guidance of your healthcare team.

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ If you're unsure whether durian is suitable for you, speak with your doctor or renal dietitian before enjoying it.

“But I feel perfectly fine… why do I need a kidney check?”

Mr. ABC, 38, always considered himself healthy. He went to work every day, enjoyed meals with friends, and carried on with life as usual. Apart from having high blood pressure, he never felt that anything was wrong.

Then, during a routine health screening, his doctor suggested further kidney tests.

😟 “But I don't have any symptoms.”
😟 “Wouldn't kidney disease cause pain?”

With some hesitation, he agreed to the tests. The results showed that he was already in the early stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Thankfully, because it was detected early, his doctor was able to help him improve his diet, manage his blood pressure, and closely monitor his kidney health.

💡 Many people don't realize that the kidneys are often called "silent organs."

🩺 Kidney damage can develop quietly for years without obvious symptoms.

No pain
Feel completely normal
Continue daily life as usual

Because of this, kidney disease is often discovered only after symptoms such as fatigue, swelling, or loss of appetite begin to appear.

People with diabetes
People with high blood pressure
Those with a family history of kidney disease
Adults over 60 years old
Individuals who are overweight

Simple blood and urine tests can help detect kidney problems before symptoms appear.

❤️ The earlier kidney disease is found, the more opportunities there are to slow its progression.

❤️ Early treatment can help preserve kidney function.

❤️ Early action means more options and better outcomes in the future.

Sometimes, the key to protecting your future isn't a complicated treatment—it's a simple screening test. 🌱

💬 When was your last kidney health screening?

There’s a moment before dialysis begins that many people don’t talk about enough.

A quiet pause… when fear, uncertainty, and questions all sit together in one heart.

😟 "Will it hurt?"
😟 "Will I be able to handle this?"
😟 "What will it feel like?"

The truth is, most people are surprised.

💉 The needle may bring a brief pinch — just a small moment of discomfort that passes quickly.

After that, dialysis itself is usually not painful.

But what people often feel isn’t just physical.

It's the tiredness that follows.
It's the adjustment to a new routine.
It's the emotional weight of learning to trust the process.

And yet—some
thing beautiful slowly happens over time.

The unfamiliar becomes familiar.
The anxiety softens.
The body learns to adapt.

And support from healthcare teams becomes a quiet kind of strength in the background.

💙 Many patients eventually say the same thing:

“It became part of my life… and it became okay.”

Because no one walks this journey alone.

There are nurses watching closely, ready to help.
There are doctors adjusting care with patience.
And there is strength inside the patient that grows, even on the hardest days.

🌿 Everyone’s experience is different.
And it's okay to feel afraid at the beginning.

But fear does not define the journey.

Support does.
Courage does.
And showing up—one session at a time—does too.

💬 If you or someone you love has ever stood at the edge of this journey, what helped you feel less afraid?
