A Little Introduction to Malaysian Children’s Hospice Kota Kinabalu (MCH KK)

MCH KK began providing services in October 2025, supporting children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families in Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas.

Our centre serves as a base for our team, training, family support, equipment coordination and community activities. We currently do not provide inpatient or residential hospice care. Our services are mainly home- and community-based.

Through MCH KK, we provide and support:

• 🏠 Home visits and paediatric palliative care support
• 👨‍👩‍👧 Support for parents, caregivers and siblings
• 🤝 Psychosocial and practical family support
• ♿ Coordination of supportive equipment and care needs
• 🌱 Caregiver, teenager, grief and bereavement support programmes
• 🩺 Training and education for healthcare providers
• 📣 Community awareness and advocacy for paediatric palliative care

Our aim is to help children and families receive compassionate, practical and coordinated support, including care closer to home whenever possible.

In Malaysia, an estimated 𝟴𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 children need .

Without it, some spend their days in hospital wards, waiting.
Others remain at home, living in constant pain.

Conditions like cerebral palsy do not take their lives.
But complications — infections, breathing difficulties, feeding issues... often do.

The truth is:
𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝.

With proper palliative care, these children can:
* 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿
* 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻
* 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲

Palliative care is not about giving up.
It is about helping children and their families live well — for as long as possible.

And care should not stop at the hospital.
It should reach into homes, into communities,
so that families are supported every hour of the day.

𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞.

It takes all of us —
to raise awareness,
to extend support,
and to make sure no child is left unseen.

PERTEMUAN BERMAKNA BERSAMA MALAYSIAN CHILDREN'S HOSPICE KOTA KINABALU

Hari ini, Thonny Chee Initiative Berhad (TCI) berkesempatan bertemu dengan pasukan Malaysian Children’s Hospice Kota Kinabalu (MCH KK) di bawah Malaysian Association of Paediatric Palliative Care (MAPPAC), bagi membincangkan peluang kerjasama serta bentuk sokongan yang boleh diberikan kepada kanak-kanak dengan keadaan yang mengancam atau mengehadkan kehidupan, serta keluarga mereka.

Antara perkara yang dibincangkan ialah keperluan bantuan pengangkutan bagi kanak-kanak yang mempunyai keterbatasan pergerakan, selain keperluan kebajikan dan sokongan praktikal lain yang dihadapi oleh keluarga di bawah penjagaan MCH KK.

Kami amat menghargai kesudian pihak MCH KK untuk berkongsi pengalaman, cabaran dan keperluan keluarga yang mereka bantu.

Bagi TCI, kami percaya bahawa perubahan yang bermakna bermula dengan mendengar, memahami dan bekerjasama.

Semoga pertemuan ini menjadi langkah pertama ke arah satu kerjasama yang dapat memberi manfaat dan meringankan beban anak-anak serta keluarga yang memerlukan.

Yesterday was our 4th Teen Workshop of the year 💕

We are deeply grateful to our sponsor, CCEP and to our unwavering MCHKK volunteers — new and old — who continue to show up with one simple intention: to spend time with these children, to accompany them, to help them enjoy the moment of togetherness, and most importantly, to let them feel seen, heard and understood.

This time, we decided to let them create their own board game — something they could make, play and eventually share with their friends.

And we loved watching them play.
We loved seeing the smiles.
We loved seeing them feel safe enough to be creative and simply be themselves.
We loved seeing them connect, laugh and feel heard.
And we loved knowing that, even for a little while, they could feel that they are not alone.

Perhaps the most beautiful part is seeing a community slowly grow around them.

Parents are now making friends and chatting with one another. When we say “MAPPAC”, their eyes light up instead of associating the name only with sadness and difficult moments.

They now feel comfortable telling us what they want and need from MAPPAC — whether it is our MAPPAC BuddyBear bag, or those beautifully knitted hats lovingly made by volunteers behind the scenes, or the activities they want us help coordinating with.

Siblings tag along too, and we make space for them in their own little “sibling session”, so they know they are included and that their feelings matter too.

Somewhere along the way, MAPPAC has become more than a service.

It has become a community.

A community where children can play, parents can talk, siblings can belong, volunteers can give, and everyone can feel a little less alone.

And honestly, we have grown to love this community we have built over the years — especially the positive energy, warmth and sense of belonging within it.

This is why we keep coming back.
Not just to run a workshop, but to support and be part of this community.

Today's therapy didn't happen at hospital.
It happened around kitchen counters.
With aprons on.
Hands busy measuring, mixing and creating.
And hearts quietly connecting.

Laughter echoed through the room.
Parents and teenagers became teammates.
Some discovered new skills.
Some discovered patience.
Everyone brought home something more than just food.

Sometimes, therapy looks like conversations over ingredients.
Sometimes, healing happens while waiting for something to bake.
Sometimes, the best memories are made when families simply get to be together.

Thank you, Kian Kok Middle School, for opening your culinary classroom to our teenagers and families. Thank you for reminding us that meaningful care can happen in the most unexpected places.

🌿 Sabah State Paediatric Palliative Care Workshop 2026🌿
Growing PPC in Sabah: Connecting Hospital, Home & Community

Paediatric palliative care is not only about end-of-life care. It is about supporting children with serious or life-limiting conditions — and caring for the whole family with compassion, dignity and practical support.

This two-day workshop brings together healthcare providers, volunteers, NGOs and community partners to strengthen knowledge, practical skills and collaboration in paediatric palliative care across Sabah.

✨ What to expect:

🔹 Day 1 – Paediatric Neuropalliative Care
For healthcare providers
Focus on:
• PPC basics
• Pain & symptom recognition
• Safe transition from hospital to home
• Multidisciplinary care stations

🔸 Day 2 – Building a Sabah PPC Support Network
For healthcare providers, volunteers, NGOs and community partners
Focus on:
• Family support
• Communication skills
• Roles, boundaries & safeguarding
• Action planning & care network building

Thank you for the overwhelming response to Beyond Goodbye: Understanding Grief, Communication & Holding Emotional Space.

Grief is a topic we need to learn, understand and hold with care — especially when supporting children, families and caregivers facing serious illness, loss and bereavement.
