πŸ– Pig Project Update πŸ–

Last Christmas, many of the OPCA community supported our Reformed Poachers Program with and in Uganda.

Reformed Poachers’ Coordinator Daniel Tumwesigye conducts monthly monitoring of the Lucky and Hope pig projects, tracking pig health, management, and Village Savings Scheme contributions for sustainability.

All pigs are healthy and well-managed with the local communities relishing the hope and support that the pigs give them and their families. By reducing the financial and hunger needs of these families, we reduce the need to hunt in the national parks.

Thank you to all those who support this great project πŸ™πŸ’š

🐒 Turtle Rescue 🐒

I have been very lucky to have spent the last couple of weeks with the team at in Watamu, Kenya πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

This amazing team works tirelessly in collaboration with local fishermen to rescue and release sea turtles that get caught in fishing nets.

Over the years, LOC has managed to save hundreds of turtles that would have been destined for the cooking pot and release them back into their natural habitat ocean 🌊

This process also allows a unique window into the population size and health of the turtles, with LOC taking important data from the individuals before returning them to the ocean, allowing LOC to gain a better understanding of the population in order to protect them πŸ™

It was a pleasure spending time and sharing ideas with this amazing team πŸŒπŸ’πŸŒŠπŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

🌱 Mangrove Planting 🌱

After spending some time with the team, learning about how they work with local community groups to raise mangrove seedlings, it was time to join the first planting event of 2026.

Thanks to for showing me around Watamu and teaching me the process of growing trees with 🌳

Mida Creek, Kenya, is an important mangrove area that is joined by incredible sea grass meadows and coral reefs in the Watamu marine park, forming an important ecosystem for many species including the critically endangered hawksbill turtle 🐒

Keep up the good work, supporting communities by planting MORE TREES TOGETHER πŸ’š πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

🦈 Shark Life 🦈

After exploring the bush in Botswana πŸ‡§πŸ‡Ό I have spent the last ten days in South Africa πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ with in the beautiful Sodwana Bay ⛱️

This project works to monitor and protect the megafauna, with a focus on the spotted ragged tooth shark, of the area. With beautiful coral reefs, plenty of turtles and sharks, Sodwana Bay is a under water haven worth protecting.

Shark Life host interns who come and take part in marine biology courses, learn to dive and get hands-on experience in marine conservation.

We have been sharing ideas on research and project development, and hopefully, OPCA can help Shark Life grow, as I take my new knowledge onto future projects.

Follow to find out more about the project and check out their online courses 🦈 πŸ“–

A big thank you to the Shark Life team, and in particular Grant Smith for hosting me, and giving me an insight into this awesome project πŸ™

It's not my usual trip, but there are some incredible views while exploring Athens with

The Acropolis of Athens is a UNESCO World Heritage site and ancient citadel,Β primarily built during the 5th century BC, dedicated to the city's patron goddess, Athena.Β It served as a religious, cultural, and political center, and was the location of several iconic structures like the Parthenon, Propylaia, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena.

🌿 Mabamba Swamp 🌿

Uganda is home to some epic landscapes, but when it comes to birding, the swamps hold some special species.

Mabamba swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria are home to a huge number of unique and beautiful birds. From kingfishers to ducks, pelicans and jacana πŸ¦†

The prize sighting is, of course, the shoebill stork. The prehistoric looking bird is a swamp specialist eating lung fish in the shallow waters. The bird is famed for its statue like patience as they wait for a fish to pass by before striking with their oversized bills.

We took with us a few Ugandan friends and students who took these awesome photos. Thanks to for the shots πŸ“·

πŸ›– Reformed Poachers πŸ›–

Recently, we attended one of the reformed poacher network meetings with . The groups of reformed poachers come together to discuss updates, but more importantly, to contribute to their village savings and loan scheme πŸ’°

Through the work of these people who previously made their living by hunting wild animals in the national park, have handed in their hunting equipment and turned away from their poaching activities to pursue a more sustainable livelihood.

supports the transition through training and aid through the supply of livestock so that the network members can rear and sell produce to support each other and their families πŸ–

We visited some of the reformed poacher families to hear how their lives have improved since they followed alternative income streams. Despite missing the taste of their bushmeat, many of the families have been able to improve their livelihoods by improving their homes and affording to send more of their children to school 🏫

We have been here in Uganda to support as we strive to continue the work with the existing groups of reformed poachers as well as creating new groups to change the lives of more families whilst also protecting the wildlife of the national park.

It has been awesome working with
A fellow trustee to help move MBC forward with the founder .

πŸ“– Education Day πŸ“–

Recently, hosted students from a local primary school. The aim of the day was to educate the children about the importance of wildlife conservation and how communities can coexist with wildlife, living so close to the national park 🌳

The day consisted of a wildlife art session, a gorilla conservation talk, a debate on the co-benefits and drawbacks of gorilla tourism, and an important discussion on family planning πŸ‘ͺ

To finish the day, the students got to experience a demonstration of traditional hunting techniques of the Batwa Pygmy community, who showed the children how to make fire without matches ! The children loved connecting to the ancient traditions πŸ”₯

It was very interesting to hear some of the opinions of the students regarding wildlife conservation and tourism. There was some eye-opening discussions that perhaps a lot of conservationists do not get the chance to engage in.

It was a great day for the students to get out of the classroom and learn something new !
