IMARET (IMAM Response & Relief Team) is a team powered by Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM) that provides humanitarian aid reliefs to any disaster and outreach programs to marginalised communities However, based on past experiences, it was recognized amongst its members that a more permanent team should be established. It was then on 19th December 2014 that IMARET was launched as the
first IMAM official team held at standby for any relief or humanitarian aid. It was started by a team of medical officers and young specialists from various medical backgrounds and expertise ranging from emergency medicine, psychiatry & general medicine
IMAM Background
For more than 20 years, Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM) has been the common platform for Malaysian Muslims health-related personnel from different fields to meet, and to share ideas, working together to face numerous issues and challenges that the Ummah is facing. The mission statement of IMAM is “Holistic Medicine based on Islam” where the members endeavours to fulfil the spirit of IMAM motto “Al-Hidayah, As-Syifa’, Ar-Rahmah” (Guidance, Healing, Mercy), attributes derived from the Holy Quran and Prophetic traditions. Founded in 1990 as a registered NGO body, the membership has now increased to well over 2,500 registered members. Among them are paramedics, nurse, house officers, consultants, students, professors, hospital and state health directors, deans etc. The mixed variety in background of its members is indeed something unique. Apart from the State Chapters, IMAM also has chapters which are meant to cater the needs of those who come from specific backgrounds, namely; Nursing Chapter, Student Chapter and Medical Officer and Specialist-in-Training (MOSIT) Chapter. Serving the needs of thousands of Malaysian Muslim students, lecturers and doctors who are abroad, IMAM have also established their own chapters (e.g. Russia, UK, Ireland) with the blessings from respective Malaysian Consulate or Embassy.
