Our HMB Sargassum Project has removed 347 truckloads of Sargassum from Akumal's Half Moon Bay so far this year... (as of May 27, 2026). Truck capacity 3.5 tons.

At the CEA Sea Turtle Camp, we have already recorded 10 sea turtle nests on our beaches and bays 🥚🌴🌙

If during your visit you are lucky enough to witness a sea turtle nesting, please remember to keep your distance and report it immediately to the Akumal Ecological Center 📩🐢 You can contact us via or visit our facilities directly.

Drone video taken at 1pm today, Monday, April 27, 2026. Most sargassum is captured and deflected. We are studying the best way to deploy 3 more barrier sections to reduce sargassum entering via the north gap.

No barrier will keep 100% of the seaweed out. Ours is projected to keep 60-70% of the seaweed off the beach, making it ultimately easier for our beach cleaning crew to clean up the remaining 30-40% that comes in.

While we are still working hard on cleaning up the legacy sargassum, plus the anticipated reduced amount that is coming into the bay, the barrier is doing its job.

Just keep shoveling! The barrier keeps about 60-70% of the seaweed out of the bay, so we clean up the rest with our hard working beach crew. So grateful for this incredible group of guys!

We just shot this video on half moon bay, had a predominantly southerly wind today. Strong southbound current as you can see. Good deflection.

HMB Barrier April 23, 2036. We noticed that due to today’s wind and current direction, there is some drift coming in at the north end. We are going to connect 2 more sections to the barrier to improve this situation.

Akumal’s Half Moon Bay sargassum barrier is out there doing its job today! There will be some additional adjusting and tightening over the next week to ensure optimum deflection and performance.

The barrier is expected to keep approx 70% of the incoming seaweed out at sea. We have doubled the size of our crew to clean up the beach and get it back under control for the next week or two after temporarily diverting the majority of the crew to the barrier installation last week.

The installation team are making great headway with the Half Moon Bay Barrier installation this week! Only 4 more sections to install and then the barrier will be tightened and adjusted for optimum positioning and sargassum deflection. Huge thanks and congratulations to the installation team, who are working around the clock to make this happen! We are so grateful for each of you!
