Here is a brief elaboration of the two main types of food fortification with pictures:

1. Bio Food Fortification (Bio fortification)

Biofortification is the process of increasing the nutrient content of crops during plant growth through plant breeding, genetic engineering, or improved farming practices. The nutrients are built into the food naturally before harvesting.

Examples:

✓Orange-fleshed sweet potato (Vitamin A)
✓Iron-rich beans
✓Zinc maize
✓Golden rice

Key idea:
Nutrients are added in the farm/field stage.

Importance:

✓Helps rural populations
✓Sustainable and cost-effective
✓Reduces micronutrient deficiencies like Vitamin A and iron deficiency

2. Industrial Food Fortification

Industrial food fortification is the addition of vitamins and minerals to foods during processing in factories or industries to improve nutritional value.

Examples:

✓Iodized salt (iodine)
✓Fortified flour (iron, folic acid)
✓Fortified cooking oil (Vitamin A)
✓Fortified milk (Vitamin D)

Key idea:

Nutrients are added after food is processed in factories.

Importance:

✓Reaches large populations
✓Prevents widespread nutrient deficiencies
✓Easy to control nutrient levels
