On we’re celebrating the freshwater ecosystems that lakes, rivers and wetlands collectively support.

Fed by the Shire River, Lake Malawi’s only outlet, Elephant Marsh is one of Malawi’s most important wetlands — supporting extraordinary biodiversity as well as the communities whose livelihoods depend on its waters.

Protecting our freshwater means protecting the whole connected landscape. 🌿🐟🦅

At the Shire Valley Conservation project, opportunities can begin as game park guards or in hospitality, building the skills and experience that open pathways to careers as wildlife guides, lodge managers, and conservation and volunteer program leaders.

Liwonde Faluweki, our Game Park and Volunteer Manager, helps our younger guards take those first steps, just as he once did.

The Shire Valley Conservation project is committed to conserving Africa's remarkable wildlife through managed capture, breeding, and translocation programs undertaken in partnership with Malawi's Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).

These Nyala were bred at Agricane’s CFC Headquarters in Ngabu before being translocated to protected small park reserves, where they are helping establish new breeding populations. In time, these herds will become valuable source populations for future conservation and restocking throughout Malawi and beyond.

Every successful translocation strengthens Africa's natural heritage and helps secure a healthier future for its wildlife.

Pangolins are among Africa’s most extraordinary and elusive mammals. Huge congratulations to the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust for another successful rescue and release. We’re lucky enough to have a few in our Thangadzi River Conservancy—but they certainly know how to stay hidden!

🫟 Meet pangolin Thope, which means ‘mud’ in Chichewa. She was named following an incident during her rescue when our vehicle got stuck in the mud (fortunately not for too long)!

Thope was discovered just outside a national park and was transferred into our care when community members brought her in. Although she was in good health, she weighed only 4kg – so she spent several months in rehabilitation, steadily gaining weight before she was finally ready for her return to the wild!

As with all the pangolins we rescue, rehabilitate and release, we appreciate the support and technical guidance given to us by the Tikki Hywood Foundation 💚

Forget ticking animals off a list.

This is about experiencing the bush differently.

Cycle beneath towering baobabs, take in the zebra grazing nearby, and enjoy the freedom of exploring the conservancy at your own pace. The conservancy is free of dangerous predators, making it one of the few places where guests can safely explore the bush by bicycle or on foot, in a way that's both peaceful and unforgettable.

Wild, but wonderfully unhurried. 🚴🦓
