A Home for Street-Connected Children in Mzuzu
Joy as we hand Over “Casa di Eleonora e Giovani”
A day of celebration and thanksgiving for the Community of St. Egidio in Mzuzu as they officially handed over a newly established home for street-connected children. The house, named “Casa di Eleonora e Giovani” (House of Eleonora and Giovanni), marks a major milestone in the community’s long-standing commitment to the most vulnerable little ones.
The journey of St. Egidio in Mzuzu began 22 years ago with the School of Peace ,a service dedicated to bringing children off the streets and into a space of learning, friendship, and dignity. That small seed of love has now grown into a tangible symbol of resilience. The new house stands as a true reflection of the consistency and determination of the Mzuzu community.
Currently, the house is home to two children, with plans to accommodate six in the near future. It is a safe, loving environment where children who once lived on the streets can find shelter, care, and hope for a better tomorrow.
What makes this event even more significant is that Malawi now has a St. Egidio home for street-connected children in every major city. From Lilongwe to Blantyre, and now Mzuzu, no child is forgotten.
The atmosphere yesterday was filled with pure joy. Community members gathered to witness the handover, and their happiness was unmistakable. In a heartfelt show of commitment, the people of Mzuzu community pledged to take care of the house and use it faithfully for its intended purpose to protect and nurture children in need.
Speaking at the ceremony, our local responsible for the school of peace Crief Creo Daniel expressed deep gratitude to the founder of the Community of St. Egidio for believing in the little children and for allowing this work to spread across the world. “Though Mzuzu is far from Rome, we are connected by the same love and the same mission,” one member said. “This house is proof that no distance is too great when it comes to caring for a child.”
The handover ceremony concluded with prayers, a true celebration of community, resilience, and the enduring power of love.
For the children who will call Casa di Eleonora e Giovani their home, yesterday was not just a handover. It was the beginning of a new chapter.
