NYCOM,MZUZU CITY COUNCIL CALL FOR SOLUTIONS -BASED YOUTH ENGAGEMENT IN MZUZU INTERFACE
The National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) and Mzuzu City Council (MCC) have urged leaders to adopt meaningful, solutions-based engagement with young people to tackle unemployment and accelerate local development.
The call was made on Thursday, 14th May 2026, during an interface meeting with Mzuzu City youth leaders held at St. John of God.The event was jointly convened by NYCOM and MCC.
Speaking at the meeting, NYCOM Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Rhoda Gadama Misomali said youth remain ready to drive Malawi’s progress but need a conducive environment to implement national policies and strategies.
“Youth are given attention when there is a problem and not when they are offering solutions,” Mrs. Gadama Misomali said. She urged leaders to engage young people early and value their proposed solutions before challenges escalate.
She highlighted the increased allocation to the Constituency Development Fund as an opportunity to advance youth empowerment across agriculture, construction, the digital economy, green energy, sports, arts, and local governance. Mrs. Gadama Misomali also reaffirmed NYCOM’s focus on strengthening coordination with local government authorities and commended Mzuzu’s youth for their active and energetic participation.
MCC Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Patrick Phiri, acknowledged gaps in youth engagement at council level. He said MCC would increase consultation with young people to support the completion of youth-focused projects, including the national youth centre under construction in Mzuzu.
Youth leaders at the meeting proposed practical solutions including tailor-made funding mechanisms, mentorship and internship programs, depoliticization of youth development, support for innovation, systems reforms, and increased attention to mental health and mindset change.
Representing the Youth for Action Campaign (YAC), Project Officer Ntchindi Bofomo Nyirenda stressed the need for youth to co-design and monitor development projects funded through the CDF.
“When young entrepreneurs, innovators and students help shape project criteria and monitoring, we see fewer stalled projects and more jobs that last,” Mr. Nyirenda said. “Give youth a seat at the planning table, not just at the launch.”
The meeting brought together youth leaders from the Mzuzu City Youth Network, Mzuzu University, YAC, and other youth-led organizations, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the National Planning Commission.
