Disability is part of human diversity. In every school, workplace, market and village, there are people living with disabilities either in physical, sensory, intellectual or psychosocial, yet, too often society sees the disability before it sees the person. People with visual impairment are lawyers, teachers, coders and entrepreneurs. What they need is not sympathy but access ♿. We must move from pity to partnership, from exclusion to access.

Disability should be viewed as a social issue not just a medical problem that needs fixing. The modern understanding is reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which Malawi ratified. A blind student is not disabled by sight, but by textbooks with no Braille or audio version. When we remove barriers, we unlock abilities. A nation is judged by how it treats it's most marginalized citizens. The society needs the skills, creativity and leadership of all it's people regardless of abilities. Kusaona sikutanthauza kulephera. Let's build a country where everyone belongs, everyone contributes and no one is left behind.

Throw back in May, 2024, when one of the special needs students, George Habbil Terrah approached me as the then Director of Gender and Students with Special Needs in the Face-to-Face students association at Mzuzu University.

Without delay, I offered him an audience where he asked for help for the replacement of his expired photochromic spectacles ( ma galasi a maso) as he had difficulties navigating the campus without them.

An online fundraising initiative was quickly launched to raise some money for the purchase of the much needed lens which were paged at K75,000.

Two days later, a well wisher from Karonga through Mr Happy Manda, a former classmate, donated an exact pair according to his medical report specifications.

The same donor, also sent 18 more pairs of different specifications, which were latter handed over to the Optometry department in the same campus to be accessed by other students who have different visual problems.

The cash, (K22,000) which was realized through the same initiative was then used to buy some few groceries and distributed to other two visually impaired students.

Many thanks to you 'Apostle' Happy Manda for the connection.

Able Campus Alliance is therefore calling for more support of any kind to help students with different disabilities to meet their different individual needs as the new semester is drawing closer on 7 April, 2026.

In December 2024, during a fundraising event at ShopRite (now ShopWise), We encountered Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, who had visited Mzuzu Shopping Mall during the Christmas festive season.

On that particular day, our crew was conducting a fundraising initiative outside the same place, aimed to help the physically challenged students at Mzuzu University.

As the Prophet was coming out of the shop, I humbly called out his name from a distance, asking him to assist a physically challenged man who was in a wheelchair, begging for financial support to finish the roofing of his uncompleted house in Lupaso, the outskirt of Mzuzu city.

Immediately the Prophet’s heard his name, he did not hesitate but reached out and gave a bundle of MK500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Malawi Kwacha), which I received on the man’s behalf and handed over to him instantly.

Considering his mobility challenges and for his safety, I temporarily stepped out of my duty to get him a taxi to his rented home in Chibavi Township, ensuring his safety.

Later, the man and his wife called to confirm that he had arrived home safely.

I told her that it was Major 1 who had given them the money not me.

After that, we continued with the body mass count and blood pressure checks to accomplish what we went there for.

May God continue to bless Prophet Shepherd Bushiri more and more.🙏🙏.
