School Clubs Emerge as Platforms for Youth SRHR Awareness in Nkhata-Bay
School clubs in Nkhata Bay have been positioned as important platforms for advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) awareness among young people through the Inclusive SRHR Programming through Information, Rights and Empowerment (INSPIRE) project.
Conducted from 22โ24 April and 28โ30 April 2026, Ungweru Organisation has successfully reached six secondary schools across the district, including Kalowa CDSS, Tukombo Private Secondary School, Tukombo CDSS, Kapanda CDSS, Chifila CDSS, and Bandawe Secondary School. The engagement focused on assessing existing clubs, identifying opportunities for SRHR integration, and establishing new structures that will support young people with accurate Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information.
The activity revealed strong commitment from both students and teachers to integrate SRHR discussions into existing school structures such as drama, debate, science, wildlife, and religious clubs. New clubs were also established at Tukombo Private Secondary School and Bandawe Secondary School to support implementation of the INSPIRE project. Despite challenges such as limited resources and low motivation among some learners, schools demonstrated readiness to create safer and more informed spaces for young people.
