Tonight, we join esteemed dignitaries at the memorial public lecture honoring the life and legacy of Chakufwa Chihana in Mzuzu, an annual event organized by Youth and Society in partnership with Mzuzu University.

The inaugural lecture, themed 'Anchoring Malawi's Democratic Future on the Foundations of the Struggle,' pays tribute to Chihana's significant contributions. As the country's second vice president under President Bakili Muluzi, Chihana's legacy extends to his son Enock, who currently holds the position but was not in attendance. Born on April 23, 1939, and passing on June 12, 2006, Chihana founded Malawi's first underground political movement, which evolved into the Alliance for Democracy (Aford).

On 15 and 16 April 2026, joined CSOs, Community Leaders and Stakeholders in a Resource Mobilization Initiative (RMI) - Human Centered Design (HCD) Understand and Empathize Workshop being facilitated by Corps Africa and Tilitonse Foundation

Overall aim was to generate deep insights into the lived experiences of CSOs, communities, and partners regarding funding relationships and resource mobilization.

Today, the Yourh Caucus joined stakeholders in an engagement meeting hosted by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) at Mzuzu Hotel. The aim of the meeting was to share important updates regarding the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS) and the management of Tax on Rental Income. The meeting highlighted the vital role of the EIS in improving taxpayer adherence, identifying fraud, and preventing illicit financial activities, all crucial actions for expanding the national tax base.

MRA also shared information about the countrywide rental income registration initiative, intended to establish an extensive database of property owners to guarantee equitable tax collection. The engagement highlighted the crucial function of civil society organizations (CSOs) in this transition, including raising public awareness and education, participating in policy advocacy to guarantee equity, and ensuring oversight to protect against possible corruption in the implementation process.

Although these reforms have evident advantages, we expressed concerns previously expressed by the business community and the public and large. Nevertheless, the forum valuably clarified misconceptions and established the foundation for continuous, trust-driven cooperation.

Mzuzu Youth Caucus has asked President Peter Mutharika to address key challenges facing the country, even as it commended his performance in the first 100 days in office.

Reading a statement, the caucus chairperson, Gomezgani Nkhoma, urged the government to fully implement austerity measures to curb what he described as wasteful expenditure of public resources and to help reduce public debt, currently estimated at K22.6 trillion.

The youth-led civil society organisation also condemned emerging violent acts against persons with albinism, including the exhumation of graves.

Mzuzu youth Caucas says the government should follow the austerity measures that they had put in place inorder to achieve economic recovery.

In a press briefing held in Mzuzu themed reflecting on the 100 days of Mutharika's reign,the chairperson for Mzuzu youth caucus Gomezgani Nkhoma said the government should restrict foreign travels as well as freeze staff recruitments as stated in the austerity measures in order to reduce public expenditures in the moment where the country is facing significant debt challenges of around 22 trillion according to figures from the ministry of finance.

Nkhoma said the government of his excellence president Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika in its first 100 days of reign has been able to achieve a stabilised economy ,ensure food security with a bag of maize costing atleast 50 thousand and introduction of free education .

He added that free education will foster an informed nation that can help improve human capital.he also said the Mombera university will increase enrollment of student in the universities thereby providing skilled labour.

Mutharika on December 31 assured Malawians that his administration is fully committed to exercising highest level of prudence and accountability in the management of public resources.

The government through Ministry of finance announced tough austerity measures to stabilize Malawi's economy, including increasing Value Added Tax (VAT) from 16.5% to 17.5% and strengthening public finance management systems to curb corruption.

Mzuzu Youth Caucus says that although the government should be commended for introducing free secondary education, it must tame its appetite for borrowing and control expenditure to revive the economy.

President of the Mzuzu Youth Caucus, Gomezgani Nkhoma, made the remarks on Monday in Mzuzu during a press briefing while offering his views on how the DPP-led administration has fared so far.

Nkhoma added that while an informed generation drives the nation's vision forward, the government must also pay attention to other sectors that contribute to the country's economic growth.

The government is yet to comment on the matter.

Speaking Truth to Power: Anti-Corruption Showpiece.

Today, we joined Youth and Society and youth leaders from Mzuzu at the Anti-Corruption Poetry showpiece. We were treated with amazing poetry under the theme, "anti-corruption." It was encouraging to see young people use their talent to amplify voices against corruption and call on other young people to join the fight.
