Shine On Malawi Donates Baby Clothes as Mzimba South DHO Celebrates World Prematurity Day
As the world marked World Prematurity Day on 17 November, Shine On Malawi joined the Mzimba South District Health Office (DHO) in commemorating the day by donating baby clothes to 15 premature babies admitted at the facility.
The donation ceremony took place at Mzimba South District Hospital, where representatives from Shine On Malawi handed over bundles of warm clothing to support the care and comfort of preterm infants.
Speaking during the event, Director of health and social services,Dr. Prince Chirwa, applauded Shine On Malawi for the timely support, noting that preterm babies require special attention.
“We appreciate the effort of Shine On Malawi in donating these baby clothes,” Chirwa said. “Let us continue taking care of these children because they are the nurses and presidents of the future.”
Shine On Malawi Director, Stalin Mughandira, said the organization was proud to take part in the commemoration and praised the nurses and mothers caring for the babies.
“As Shine On Malawi, we are happy to celebrate with these babies. That is why we took part in this celebration, because they are the foundation of our children’s future,” Mughandira said.
Mughandira also thanked Lilian Mackenzie from Scotland, through Banana Box for Babe Clothes, and Christian Non-Local Giving Basics Organization in the United States for donating additional T-shirts for the nurses and mothers.
He added that Shine On Malawi remains committed to continuing its support in collaboration with the government and health facilities.
Chirwa also commended the nurses in the neonatal ward for their dedication in caring for premature babies and for encouraging mothers during a challenging period. He urged mothers to seek medical care immediately when they notice unusual symptoms in their babies instead of waiting until conditions worsen.
One of the mothers, Pilirani Luhanga, who recently delivered twins, expressed gratitude to the organization and other well-wishers for the donation.
“We don’t take this support for granted. May God bless all who donated,” she said.
This year’s World Prematurity Day was commemorated under the theme: “Give Preterm Babies a Strong Start for a Brighter Future.”
