A 2024 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) by Yale University has ranked Malawi ninth lowest in Africa struggling to prioritize environmental health and 158th globally.

The EPI has 58 indicators across 11 issue categories in 180 countries ranging from climate change mitigation and air pollution to waste management, sustainable fishing, agriculture, deforestation and biodiversity protection.

The EPI, conducted by the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, provides insights that can help countries address environmental challenges and refine their policy choices.

Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy (Cepa) Executive Director, Herbert Mwalukomo agreed with the findings of the report saying there is little political will that prioritises environmental issues.

The report also comes at a time the Malawi government is still struggling to enforce a ban on thin plastics.

Electronic waste (e-waste) is rapidly becoming an environmental problem, particularly for the most developed countries. While there are technological solutions for processing it, these solutions are costly. Consequently, the cheaper option for most developed countries has been to export most of the waste to less developed countries like Malawi.

The Energy and Environmental Center - EEC is increasingly concerned about the high importation and presence of end-of-life electric and electronic devices and equipment in Zomba and other cities of Malawi.

Water storage and water regulation Cannes of The Earth Surface

Introduction:
Mountains possess a unique capability to regulate water resources, acting as natural water tanks that store water and gradually release it into surrounding streams and rivers. This characteristic not only supports the sustainability of ecosystems but also plays a crucial role in preventing floods and droughts in surrounding areas. In this article, we will explore the significance of mountains as efficient water regulators and discuss how they form an unparalleled irrigation system on Earth's ,Mountains very important to keep water on earth surface until rain.Actually some places are no mountains That place call Flat surface.there couldn't store the water. There have to make water tank or something to collect rain water 💦

1. Water Absorption and Storage:
Mountains, with their sloping terrains and porous surfaces, are ideal for water absorption. Heavy rainfall, snowmelt, and even mist and fog are absorbed by the permeable soils and rocks found in mountain regions. This extensive water storage capacity helps to prevent water runoff and facilitates the gradual release of water downstream, ensuring a steady water supply, especially during dry periods.

2. Mitigating Floods:
One of the crucial roles of mountains in water regulation is the prevention of floods. When heavy rainfall occurs, mountains act as natural barriers that intercept and slow down the flow of water. The complex network of slopes, ridges, and channels within the mountain ecosystem helps to disperse and regulate the release of excess water. By doing so, mountains prevent flash floods, protecting downstream communities and their infrastructure from the destructive force of fast-flowing water.

3. Ensuring Water Availability during Dry Spells:
Conversely, during periods of low rainfall or drought, mountains serve as a vital lifeline by gradually releasing the stored water. The underground water systems in mountains supply st

Pulsing with life that sustains us all, forest hold the earth's memories and our future in their roots.

Forests are home to over 80% of terrestrial biodiversity and they support the livelihoods of 1.6 billion people globally. They are crucial for combating climate change, as they absorb nearly 2 billion tons of CO2 annually.

Yet, each year, approximately 12 million hectares of forest are lost, largely due to agricultural commodities' production like palm oil, beef, soy, timber, and pulp and paper.

To stop this loss, the way these goods are produced needs to change, so it doesn’t lead to more trees being cut down.

This and every day, let us all appreciate and commit to safeguarding these networks of life .

Scientists at LUANAR say genetically-modified maize has shown resistance to fall armyworms

Scientists at Lilongwe University of Agriculture (LUANAR) say trials have shown that Genetically Modified (GMO) maize seeds are resistant to insects, particularly fall armyworms which affect maize yields in Malawi.

The trials for the GMO maize are being done at LUANAR’S Bunda Campus and according to scientists, leaves for maize plants that have trans genes are intact while those that do not have trans genes have had their leaves damaged by the fall armyworms.

The scientists want Malawi to adopt genetically modified maize seeds, saying GMOs can help in ending food security because of their resistance to insects which affect yield of maize.
