The Mother’s Fun Run Sleepover Challenge was all about turning solidarity into action.

Early in the morning of 28th August 2026, men rolled up their sleeves and prepared breakfast for mothers and guardians at the wards. Then, men and women came together to serve and distribute breakfast and gifts. Showing that supporting maternal, newborn and child health is everyone’s responsibility.

WaterAid also stepped up, distributing buckets and hand sanitisers to promote hygiene and help protect mothers, newborns and children

The Sleepover Challenge continued at a high note at Mapale Healthcare Facility in Mzuzu, where female participants went beyond simply showing up. They stepped forward to serve.

The women joined hands with medical practitioners in the maternity wards, assisting with various activities and offering much-needed support to healthcare workers caring for mothers and their newborns.

Their presence brought an extra hand, a caring heart, and a strong sense of solidarity to the maternity wards. Through their time, energy, and willingness to serve, the participants demonstrated that meaningful change often begins with small acts of compassion and a commitment to helping others.

The Sleepover Challenge at Mapale Healthcare Facility is currently underway, with officials at the facility highlighting critical shortages of essential maternity equipment.
Among the items urgently needed are mattresses, foetal scopes, sterilizers, resuscitators, and oxygen concentrators.

Health officials say the lack of these essential appliances is affecting the facility’s capacity to provide quality maternal and newborn care.

Mapale Healthcare Facility serves a population of approximately 33,140 people, while an average of 350 babies is born at the facility each month, further increasing the demand for adequate maternity equipment and resources.
