As we look back on the 2025 General Elections, CHRR is proud to have contributed to promoting peaceful, inclusive, and informed electoral participation through civic education trainings and community outreach activities conducted across Malawi under the UNDP-supported project on Inclusive and Peaceful Electoral Participation.
Ahead of the elections, CHRR engaged hundreds of participants—including persons with disabilities, women, youth, traditional leaders, and community members—on human rights, electoral laws, peaceful coexistence, and the prevention of electoral violence.
At a time when misinformation, political intolerance, and tensions had the potential to divide communities, these engagements provided safe spaces for dialogue, learning, and collective action. Participants gained knowledge about their electoral rights and responsibilities, how to report violence, and the importance of rejecting hate speech and political intimidation.
The impact was evident in the peaceful participation witnessed in many communities during the electoral period. Traditional leaders strengthened local peacebuilding efforts, vulnerable groups became more confident in engaging in electoral processes, and communities demonstrated greater appreciation for tolerance, inclusion, and democratic accountability.
Importantly, persons with disabilities were given platforms to raise concerns about accessibility, representation, and voter autonomy. These conversations encouraged communities and stakeholders to promote equal participation and safeguard the rights of every voter.
