As we commemorate International Albinism Awareness Day,

we celebrate a significant milestone with the official launch of the National Action Plan on Albinism. This long-awaited framework marks an important step towards promoting the rights, protection, and inclusion of persons with albinism in Malawi.

DIWA, working alongside other partners, is proud to have contributed to ensuring that the Action Plan is gender-responsive through a Sida-funded project implemented in coalition with ADF and IA.

The launch now paves the way for the dissemination and implementation of the Action Plan, strengthening collective efforts to address discrimination, violence, barriers to services, and the unique challenges faced by women, girls, men, and boys with albinism.

As we move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to working with government, organizations of persons with disabilities, and other stakeholders to ensure that the Action Plan translates into meaningful change and that no person with albinism is left behind.

Hear the Message from our Board Chair Philadelphia Motladiile from Botswana on International Albinism Awareness Day 2026

Today, as we commemorate International Albinism Awareness Day, we join the global community in embracing the theme "Proudly in My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones."
This theme reminds us that every person deserves to live with dignity, safety, respect, and equal opportunity, regardless of their skin tone or genetic condition. It calls on all of us to challenge prejudice, reject discrimination, and build communities where persons with albinism are valued, included, and empowered.

Solidarity, Collectivism, and Collaboration:

We stand together because violence against one woman is violence against us all.
we recognize that the oppression of one woman, particularly those at the intersections of gender, disability, age, or other forms of marginalization, is a threat to the rights and dignity of all women.
Our collective strength is our greatest tool for resistance, protection, and transformation.
Join us in ending violence against women!

During the Feminist Funders Dialogue, DIWA shared its experiences on resource mobilization, partnership building, and collective engagement.
DIWA highlighted how flexible and trust-based funding has strengthened its ability to respond to the priorities of women and girls with disabilities, invest in institutional growth, and sustain advocacy beyond short project cycles.
The organization also reflected on the value of partnerships with feminist movements, disability rights actors, donors, and regional networks in amplifying the voices of women with disabilities.

DIWA emphasized that collective engagement is critical in the current context of shrinking civic space, funding cuts, and backlash against gender equality. By working together, feminist funders, women’s rights organizations, and disability movements can build stronger, more inclusive, and more resilient movements that leave no woman behind.
