Amidst ongoing economic meltdown, Botswanaโ€™s local mining companies including in the diamond sector must diversify outside core business or the country would remain under strain, independent economist Dr Rammika has said.
Botswana is grappling with economic hardships emanating particularly from decline in mineral revenue (diamonds) because of persisting weak demand for rough diamonds at the global level.

Latest economic data by Statistics Botswana (SB) drawn on its Index of the Physical Volume of Mining Production Fourth quarter 2025 said overall mining production declined by 44.7 percent year on year.

The ongoing knowledge exchange visit between the Zimbabwe Artisanal and Small-Scale Women Miners Association (ZASWMA), the Malawi Women in Mining Association, and Planet Gold Zimbabwe continues to inspire, empower, and transform women in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector. From the outset, collaboration with key partners has set a strong foundation for practical learning, innovation, and safer mining practices.

A key highlight was the direct engagement with Planet Gold Zimbabwe, where participants gained valuable insights into safer, mercury-free gold processing technologies. This experience reinforced the importance of adopting environmentally sustainable practices that protect both miners and surrounding communities.

The delegation also toured elution plants and various milling sites, including stamp mills, witnessing gold extraction processes firsthand. These site visits provided practical understanding beyond theory โ€” bridging knowledge gaps and enhancing the technical skills critical for productivity, efficiency, and safety in ASM operations.

Such physical tours are vital in ASM. They promote experiential learning, encourage adoption of best practices, and build confidence among women miners. Seeing operations in action deepens understanding and enables easier application of knowledge in their own communities.

This exchange is more than collaboration โ€” it is a powerful step toward sustainable mining, regional unity, and the economic empowerment of women miners across the region.
