Hygiene Village Project Brings Relief to Cyclone Jude Survivors in Katuma camp- Mulanje
On March 13, 2025, Hygiene Village Project stepped in to support survivors of Cyclone Jude, delivering essential WASH supplies to families in Katuma, Traditional Authority Mkanda, Mulanje.
The cyclone displaced 172 household (562 people) forcing survivors into Katuma CBO Camp where people have severely limited access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare due to flooding.
Emergency Response
Colles Nyirenda, Hygiene Village Project Officer for Mulanje and Chikwawa, emphasized the organization’s commitment to disaster-affected communities.
Our main operations are in TA Mabuka, but when disasters strike—like cyclones or cholera outbreaks, we extend our support across Mulanje so when we received reports from Mulanje District Health Office about Katuma, we knew we had to act, Nyirenda said.
The organization distributed chlorine for water treatment, brooms, mops, water storage buckets, squatting plates for temporary latrines, and 172 water storage buckets to improve sanitation in the camp.
Urgent Need for Clean Water
Senior Mulanje District Health Officer, Mr. Nasoni, welcomed the support but warned that the situation remains critical.
Flooding has displaced families, collapsed toilets, and increased the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera. Hygiene Village Project’s intervention is a vital step, but more help is needed, he said.
Call for More Support
Despite the relief efforts, urgent needs remain. Mulanje DHO is calling on government agencies, NGOs, and well-wishers to support ongoing efforts to improve water, sanitation, and healthcare in the camp.
As Katuma works toward recovery, ensuring proper hygiene and sanitation will be crucial in preventing disease outbreaks and protecting survivors.
