JOINT STAKEHOLDER EFFORTS LAUNCHED TO ADDRESS KABAZA CHALLENGES IN BLANTYRE CITY
The Malawi Coalition for Kabaza Stakeholders and Associations (MACOKASA) has officially extended its road safety and law compliance activities to Blantyre City, marking a major step in strengthening safety, regulation, and coordination within Kabaza operations in the city.
On 13 January, MACOKASA convened a multi-stakeholder engagement meeting at Blantyre City Council, bringing together the City Council, City Councillors, the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services, the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Revenue Authority, the Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF), Kabaza consultants, owners, operators, and other partners.
The engagement, presided over by Blantyre City Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gerald Lipikwe, focused on addressing key Kabaza challenges including road safety, compliance, crime, and regulation, as MACOKASA expands its operational footprint beyond Lilongwe.
Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration, with the City Council and Malawi Police Service pledging to strengthen enforcement in high-risk areas prone to Kabaza-related attacks, theft, and road accidents. Emphasis was also placed on public sensitization, improved communication, and coordinated enforcement strategies.
As part of the extension, practical joint enforcement actions were conducted in Limbe on 14 January, where stakeholders collectively supervised Kabaza operations, reinforcing compliance with helmet use, load limits, and traffic regulations.
The Blantyre engagement follows MACOKASA’s ongoing national efforts to promote safe roads, lawful operations, and improved welfare for Kabaza operators, with similar activities planned for other districts that have signed Memoranda of Understanding with the coalition.
MACOKASA remains committed to working with government and partners to build a safer, regulated, and sustainable Kabaza sector across Malawi.
